question for you scrap yard owners

hey guys ive been buying extension cords and other low grade wire for the last 1 1/2 to 2 months from a local yard for .70 cents a pound. I only deal with the employees who I give the money and they give it to management . Ive been wondering with the market the way it is if prices have gone down and im still paying the rate from 2 months ago. I'm afraid to guy opening my mouth to management in fears the price will raise. So the question is , is .70 cents fair ?. they pay .50 cents a pound as of two months ago. how much profit do scrap yards make on insulated wire ? im thinking .15-.20 cents a pound is that accurate ?

Instead of worrying about the scrap yard's profit margin, you need to figure "recovery rate" for each type of cord (how much copper per foot or pound of cord). Then calculate how much you get per pound of cord. For instance - if you get 25 lbs of copper per 50 lbs of cord, your recovery rate is 50%. If #2 copper is selling for $2/lb, then you'll get you'll get $1/lb for that cord. If you want to see a 100% profit, then you'll offer .50/lb for that type of cord. (I assumed you buy it to strip and resell)
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

thanks mick . I only strip the large cords . I get between 38-44% recovery rate on these cords and I get bare bright for the stripped wire which is $3.02 #. I can sell the cords I don't strip for .90# , so I don't lose money

Good deal. Then I think you answered your own question. Myself, I don't care about their profit margin - just mine.

I agree with Mick. Find your recovery rate per wire and know your selling price before you buy and forget the seller. I just finished a batch of mixed of wire and learned which of the 5 grades of wire I can make the most money on. Each person is different, every type of stripping machine is different. Find your nitche

I consider computer wire "low grade" and that is not what your buying, soooo what are you getting all uptight about??
As long as your making a decent profit off of it, isn't the yard entitled also??

The yard I take shred to has about a 100% margin on a lot of their non-ferrous. When it comes to clean copper, stainless, and aluminum, it's more like a 50-60%. For example, they pay $1.90 for #2 copper.

    1. every one is entitled to a fair profit.

    2. greed will bit some one in the butt, usually the greedy one eventually.

    3. experienced yard managers/owners and pawn shop owners are pretty much the same breed. hard noised and all business.

    4. any stranded wire no matter how bright and shiny is #2

    5. most yards have created a new classification called com wire or #3 some still pay #2 for com wire shop around.

How much do you thinks it costs to run a yard where you have employees, vehicles, heavy equipment, money out on inventory that you have to sit of for months sometimes, and insurance? Plus the owner would like some cash left for him at the end of the week

I agree with mick. I you can make money on it don't worry about someone else's profit. As you buy more you should try to negotiate a better price. As someone said in another post. Offer them a per ton price at maybe .55/lb. Good luck

The small amount may be the reason. I know, it usually works the other way with scrap, but in this situation the more you buy the better price you may get. They may be selling this at 0.50/lb to their buyer...only they would know this. But also, this is only one transaction for all of their wire. They're pretty much doing you a favor IMO.

Quality post, this forum is a great idea exchange. Love it. My buyer grades wire by percentage too. Its off the lme copper price and its a basis. So cu is 3.00 a pound and the basis is 2.78, maybe its the smelter/refiners cut? Off that 2.78 50 percent number one would be half that less a chop fee. THeres a awesome granular here near Worcester. NEver worked with them (Im a batt, core guy), not enough gaylords of wire. Like none except for computer wire.

Is computer wire lowgrade. I thought it ran around 40 something percent or 50. I dont know. Just thinking out loud.

Mick, sir scrap and 688 are board vets and have knowledge. Just from reading I make more $ from something that I learned today. I thought I knew a lot about of scrap.

Its all about margin. I really learn that when I get something for free. In five years I never took a thing as a donation I paid for it all. Big base but ran smaller margins.

Have a few servers dropped of with all wire and printers etc etc. Phones. People feel good about recycling, electronics.

Little different than Hey I want 120 on that gm bread loaf (lrg), Na Im getting paid 103. SOrry, Oh yea that was the price last year, Buy at $80. You making what 20 percent and putting out 5 times the money to make what you return. Im starting to like larger margin. Find good memory that is fast and big. Pull in what..1000 percent. Im liking the cellphone and wireless market. These touchpads that need batteries Im buying them all up. If you get them sell to me. I have a job for my wife at home now... Besides the kids. Thats a lot guys. Hug your wife when you go home. Were scrappers. Think of them not what your going to get and sell the next day.

Id hate to say most of us owners are making less than you think. I know my own clients that are in a small cheap truck buying cats and rotors and making a lot more than me.

Im a small timer and set back this early in the month and feel a odd rumble in my stomach do to that 6 to 10k nut to run it let alone fuel, help, materials. Thats rent and other reciprocating debt.

Cant meet brick and mortar. Pocket dealing is nice too. SUch cool diverse group we are. Common goal. Scrap the world and make it new!!

    Aaron
