an idea for the thrift stores

Just got back from a trip to north west pennslyvania with the folks , probably was on some of your guys stomping ground. I toke a tour of new castle school of trades , anyway im back amd its back to bussiness tommorow while i was laying in the bed at the hotel i thought of a potential oppurtuity for my local thrift store .my local thrift store is run by christian missionarys , there single and nonprofit . They take in appliances just like any other donation . They however have guidelines on their website that they only take appliances that work , and they cant be rusted or more than 10 years old . However they only have 1 donation day on saturday. I am going to see if i can get into contact with the revrend if he would be interested in putting out the word that they will take broken and old appliances and ill come by every saturday and pay them $5 a pop for every major appliance . And say $3 for each microwave and dishwasher. Im hoping this could work into something . Any of you guys ever done this or think about doing it ? And what do you think ?

If its run by a church, I'm sure they would do it. Especially for a "donation".

My local thrift store was putting to many hours and to much time into picking up non working and old appliances. We came to a compromise where now if its something they cant take they just pass on the contact info to me by email and i take it from there. This way they get more bang for there buck from their volunteers and equipment.

I would think that if you are a one man show that could get to be a little overwhelming pretty quickly, I however have toyed with asking my local thrift shop if I could do that, but the difference is, my shop takes donations any time and people just leave em in the back so they constantly have broken stuff to throw away.

It sounds great to me. Win-win in my opinion. You get scrap and they get money they wouldn't have other wise.

I use to set up at flea markets and car shows. Id bring a product line I sell there.

While I could walk around, always have a magnet. Old silver plate copper brass candle stick holders etc. By the end of the day my backpack (not a day tripping pack !) would be full of old brass and copper I bought for next to nothing. 40 to 50 pounds sourced is atleast $100.

I can remember taking. Scale fishing scale and bag. I started weighing peoples stuff and this old timer (I like old timers learn a lot and most have fought to give us freedom) says I'm not selling that as scrap. Kid your going around buying all these to scrap. At first I thought wtf. Who cares. Some people will lit on ebay and score. Then I realized. He wanted someone else to just have. Would rather give for free than sell to me for a buck so it won't be melted down.

At salvation army don't think u have to worry about that. Lol.

You can make some good $$$ doing this.

Just dont take off more than u can handle. Then your stuck chasing huge accounts to try snd make $$.

I fondly remember them made 5 dollars I kept it days. Lol.

Okay also I'm going to say this. Holy .... Salvation army has sweet stuff. I just I got a new wool jacket. This thing is made in America 100 percent wool and I'm not a used cloths guy but what. For 5 bucks.

Really. Looked on the bay they are 50 to 100 used and not this nice.

Also picked up a cashmere sweater.

    Sweet.
