    Some business advice...?

    Hey all you scrappers,

Rees' Recycling here from Sudbury On, I'm looking at expanding my business from free scrap removal to something bigger and looking for advice on what sort of equipment to buy first, and some advertising tips. I have a pickup with a 16" beaver tail car hauler with a winch. I was thinking maybe a roll off trailer and with a few bins once I've established contracts first. Not to sure anyways. And for advertising, I just have ads on Kijiji, I have business cards on their way from vistaprint.com. Any other advertising ideas?? Anyways any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Rees' Recycling

Seriously, I'd not buy anything till you get started and figure out what you need as you go along. I assume, with a car hauler, you've got tie-down chains. So, you've got enough to get started. Go for it. If you find you need something, buy it.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I agree with Mick. As your business expands, you will identify priorities. I try to get by with what I have until it just made sense to expand my equipment. Example I used a star wrench to replace flats until I realized a cordless ratchet would be helpful with this and pulling parts. Bought the best I could find and it goes everywhere with me. Same thing with a trailer winch. I used com a longs and chains to load equipment until I had to much to move. Then it made sense to buy and mount a winch on my trailer. Good luck on your expansion and keep us posted.

One thing I have learned , and I may be young (17 years old ). Is to only spend money and buy the tools when you need them , I started out with only hand tools and worked my way up. Just because you have money , doesnt mean you have to spend it. Your not the government. That money you spent on that "bargin"for tools could have been used to buy something you could flip or scrap. Thats just my 2 cents

I disagree with these post. You have to spend money to make it. As long as your motivated dive in deep. Cold calls and emails at night and work your ass off during the day.

I totally agree , that you need to spend money to make money but you dont need the fanciest or the newest tools . As long as it works and does its job , it doesnt have to look pretty , you can use that money to buy more scrap.
