We are starting to get more lead acid batteries coming in. I understand there is more there than just scrap sometimes.
Anyone have advice on how to sort these, potentially identify higher value lead acid batteries vs lower value? What about identifying lead acid batteries for reuse/refurb?
I think a greater education on this can help us all out! Thanks guys!

I have seen some used tire shops selling used batteries but it seems one would have to have some type of test procedure in place to know if they are good or not

I would find a local shop that can handle the refurb of the batteries and see what ones they want. There is one near my house that pays well for the reusable ones. Specially the deep cycle ones. Just like any other comodity you have to find someone who wants to buy it for more than the other guy. I found this place in your neck of the woods. Might want to give them a call. I think there is a load tester you can get at any auto parts store. that can tell you pretty much the condition of the battery. I do know this weather has a big effect on them. What may test bad in this weather can test good in warm weather. Also there is a chemical system that rejuvenates LAbs if they are in decent condition.
My limited understanding is there are 2 basic things that kill a battery. 1. build up inside the battery that shorts out a cell. 2. a broken post. Im not an expert on batteries.

Check your local and state laws regarding retail sale of batteries. If I sell just one battery to the general public, there is a whole different set of laws to follow regarding storage, signage etc, etc.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Old dude is right they make a meter where you can put the battery under a load just like starting a car, I have one but it's in my cell tower tools. I sell my good batteries for 25 apiece to a car dealer here, I would imagine retail for used batteries would be somewhere between 40-60 if you had a storefront

I would say that's likely. I know they're watching me to see if I'll slip. Even though I don't sell to Exide anymore and don't get near the quantities I used to, I'm still "Mick's Metal and Battery Recycling" as far as the State DEP and federal EPA are concerned.

So far our small yard get better prices on lead batteries from the larger scrap yard our yard sells too than I can get from Exide. Batteries are number two in out sales pound wise and number three dollar wise.

Good post to start and I will keep my eye open for more info being posted. I have 18 large deep cycle batteries from a huge UPS system that are guaranteed for 10 years. I suspect that they are more valuable than an automotive battery, so am looking for an industry pro to chime in and give me insight from the real world. I'm trying to sell the system as a whole, but if i need to break it down I want to maximize the parts.

Deep Cycle batteries usually bring 1/4 higher price than regular car/lt trk batteries. It's all about weight. A car/lt trk battery will average 35.4 pounds, so weigh your Deep Cycle and figure from there.
How do you tell if it is deep cycle?

It'll say "DEEP CYCLE" on it. Usually they are taller than regular car/tk battery and ALWAYS weigh more. Usually about 1/4 more.
