Had an Idea that I havent seen on here yet

Has anyone ever called or stopped by a locksmith to see if they had any scrap?

    Locks and keys are brass....
    Some are steel........

Not a bad idea, i remember 1 time a "lock & safe" company called me, and i hauled away about 4,000lbs of small safes. I pulled up to the loading dock and they did all the work.

I would love to see the guys faces at the yard seeing a truck load of safes coming in. Had to raise some eyebrows. heh.

I work at a hardware store, and we re-key locks all the time. We usually keep the keys from the new locks we sell and re-key since the customers can't use them anyway. Another guy in the store is the one who got me into scrapping and has been there a lot longer than me and has claim to the scrap from the store. (Don't wanna bud in on his turf since I work with him too.) But check with your local hardware store too. We sell appliances and take away the old ones as well. Could be a source of scrap for someone else if not me.

I have been to one scrapyard where I saw a 5 gallon barrel of keys. The manager there to,ld me that it had taken about 4 years for the bucket to fill up. The price of brass at the time was about $1.15, and he had about 70 pounds (or so he thought). to have to wait 4 years for enough keys to make $80 just isnt worth it.

Well sh&#...I tossed out two buckets of keys/locks. Figured they would scrap at steel price and I didn't want to mess with them at the time.
