    20 comercial ac units

I have access to 20 comercial ac units ranging from 15-20 tons made by trane and carrier. How much could I get in scrap?

    (all r22 has been recovered)

    Is it worth it.

assuming you mean 30-40,000 #'s, you could get $4000 to $6000 shred... each. This would be minus the extremely large forklift and truck bed to haul it if you cannot break it down at the site. And the cost of your time

would get quite a bit above that if you do some small sorting, grab copper, get condensers, separate motor, etc.

Do it and report back. best way to tell. No risk isn't profitable, all risk is dangerous.

My method would be to take very conservative guesses on the matetial makeup of the unit (put the highest weight percentages in the lowest paying categories). Base your decision off of that number, you should be happy you low balled your estimate if you do scrap it.

Thanks for the reply. This is my first scrap attempt. What do you mean by "shredding"?

You should get about 9 pouinds of clean cu/al radiators and 1 and 1/2 pounds of copper per rated ton along with a pound per rated ton of copper motor winding. 4 to 6 pounds of insulated wire per unit and a bunch of tin.

In this case "Ton" is the cooling rating/capacity, not weight.

Depends on what your cost is to acquire and move them.

15-20 tons could also be referring to the capacity
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

Yeah 15-20 tons is the capacity. Has anyone scrapped a larger ac unit like this?

One thing to check on is your local yard and their policy regarding A/C units. My local yard I normally use won't take any A/C stuff w/out an HVAC license.

If you were in Cali I would take you up on it. How much you think I could get?

Sounds to me like your in over your head. We do have a couple of "experts" here concerning the removal/scrapping of big AC units.
I would be searching back thru their old threads as they have posted a lot of good info here, with pic's.

Freonjoe is who you should look for, tho there are plenty of others that will give you an idea as Mech said. Lots of info here on AC jobs. Me..I go with Joe, it's what he does.

My other response got lost . ??
Again . Scrap one for aluminum copper coil then copper and brass then the compressor and steel. Then add payouts . Times 19 and make a whole sale offer to scrap yard . Or just ask to scrap and sell at yard. Move in container (big can ). Fly me in ill help . Real talk.

I know nothing about this, but on this subject I would definitely listen to a guy called Freon Joe. Just sayin'.

Wait, bigger units go by tons, not btu's?

    What is tons referring to?
