The oddest thing for me would have to be a DVR processing unit I received from a large name brand telecommunications company. (Friend of mine works for them and he's been giving me loads (500+lbs a month) of telecom stuff from 1985 and beyond) The device was enclosed in a large rack-mount enclosure, then screwed all together into a backplane board. The modules were really thick circuit boards that were inside an aluminum enclosure specifically designed for the part. I have a picture of the boards on an old thread of mine if you want to see them. Tons of gold, TA caps, high grade chips, and other drooling goodies. I think I got paid almost $15/lb when I sold them to the board buyer. There was a silver lined board (just as good and thick, only smaller) attached to the foot-long gold one. All total, each one weighed about 2.5 lbs each. Great payday, and definitely the strangest thing I've found.
The biggest payday I've had was when I was at work. I work at a computer repair shop, and sometimes people come in to donate old equipment they want to get rid of. Usually we keep it and let the store owner sort it out to see if anything is worth selling in the store. Since there's only three employees (including me) and the owner, the other workers and I pretty much like to take what we deem good for ourselves and leave the junk behind. One day, I was alone at the shop, and this lady came in with a box that held paper reams. She asked if we took old equipment and parts as donations. I said yes, without looking, and she set it on the floor, said thanks, and left. I took it back, opened it up, and found lots of old bulky graphics cards. I thought oh, well, minor payout on this. When I got home and started taking things out, I found gold RAM just underneath the slot cards. After weighing the RAM, I had about 28lbs of gold RAM. I waited until the prices went up as much as I thought they would, then sold slot cards, HDD boards, laptop boards, and gold RAM all in one shipment. Payout was through the roof. I haven't been able to even get close to that total since. If I had a box like that for every ***hole customer that came in to the shop, I'd retire at 25. Not saying the lady that donated it was an ***hole. Not at all. Just those people that think they know what's up, and you are just there like "Nope, you dumb****. Get the f*** outta here and stop looking at me like you wanna suck my-" Yeah. Those people. Hope this doesn't offend anyone. I just get these people more often than I'd like, and sometimes you have to vent when you're in the zone.
Anyway, there's my 4 cents. 2 for 1, 2 for 2. See what I did there.....
Take care!
