A while back, several years ago I think, someone ( not Skippy) was posting about how we were screwing the yards. By turning in printers and vacuums with steel, insulated wires with ends on, ribbon wire mixed in with #2 insulated, selling alum wound motors with copper wound and so on. Looks like some yards are changing how they are buying. What has changed by you lately?

selling insulated wire is a fairly new thing in my area....in the last couple years they are not allowed to accept burnt wire....before this coated wire only paid around .25 a pound..after the law passed all the yards had to raise there prices on coated wire...it started out at one price for all coated wire...then it went to 2 grades.....last week they had 3 different grades of coated wire.....
my main yard still gladly takes vaccum cleaners, printers, and coffee pots....

Nothing has really changed for me locally, it still varies from yard to yard. One of the main items I take in is dishwashers with the plastic bodies. My main yard gladly takes them, and pays tin price. My secondary does not take them.

Recently went to my core buyer.. Usually when I take off Aluminum Based Car Parts (PCM, Roof Racks, Evap Canisters etc) he has always paid sheet price. Apparently, his upstream buyer has now strapped him with a 3% garbage rate- meaning if it has more than 3% of steel, boards inside the PCM, etc. on it- it is now graded at "Dirty Aluminum" which pays .20/lb vs .45 on Sheet. Luckily, I only had 39 lbs off the last car.. but I spent a few moments discussing with him what he needed in order to get some of that stuff back to sheet! .20 is some bull-honky.
I don't blame my core buyer- he gets hamstrung by his upstream buyer- which happens to be THE largest yard/racquet in a 3 county area.. They LOVE to pull the "Oh you just brought in 1000 lbs of what was "X" last week.. well our NEW rules THIS week are it isn't acceptable as "X" and we'll just have to pay you "Y" instead" I refuse to take anything to this yard because of these games.. but they seem to have their hand in just about everything around.. they are hard to avoid!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!

I have sent the yard a roll off of shread two weeks in a row but they want to nit pick my aluminum cans. Give me a break.

By me starting to change slowly, no bikes with tires, no plastic tub dishwashers, no chainlink fence. Now alum lawn motors were dirty alum $.25 now auto transmissions for $.15 Nothing big yet, but so far we dont have a #3 insulated wire price but I think thats next...

my main place changed how the paid for certain items (#1 copper, ACR's and catalytic converters) they now send a check. now when I take that stuff in I also try to pack in almost a ton of shred and some aluminum to make it worth my time.

nothing new. we talked about this 3 years ago and sence. As times and the economy get worse things will get tougher. The more work the yard makes you do the less they have to do and those man hours turn into gross for them, it is simple business.
There were simple rules most all yards followed. the 1% rule and the copper percentage rules and so on. Now every one needs to find a way to boost their bottom line if they are to survive.
Among the first victims were sled lots (Car tote the note lots) and car scrappers, the price of old cars went from 5 or 600 dollars to 1800 and above, scrap cars went from free to 100 to 4 and 500.
It has filtered down to every one including you and the yards.
The bad news is, it is going to get worse, much worse. just my .02

I have found a yard that seems to want to feed their wire chopper and are more aggressive in their prices for wire. Some will not buy ribbon wire at all while the one yard pays good prices. Mike

My yard buys ribbon wire to. Always gives me a chuckle when I see someone say it's worthless. Guess we're just lucky Olddude.
To those of you who can't get anything for ribbon wire. You can send it all to me, or Olddude..lol!

pukett, your yard did not change, the law did. The new law in Michigan started July 1st. If you are selling wire, copper pipe, A/C coils or catalytic converters, you get paid by check if it is over 25.00. Businesses are exempt from this law, by the way.

as AE mentioned businesses are exempt but they must have your business info on file (llc dba)

We have a similar rule here, with copper only tho. If you bring in copper you get paid in check form. They are cool about it though, you bring in copper an a bunch of other stuff, they'll pay you cash but give you a check for the amount of the copper. Local bank, so on my way back home I hit the bank, cash it out an go on with the day.
