sorry fact. do you like your present government regulated utillity? do you like the efficiency of the postal system? do you like any of the other abc regulating government systems. then you will love regulated internet.
Don't care how it starts out just remember the government and the, untended and intended consequences and what the gov will eventually will turn it into.
I think of the internet as a highway and not as a utility. The metaphor that is often used to describe the internet, the "Information Highway", makes my point.
Highways in this country as we know them were designed, built and maintained by governments. Cities, counties, states and federal all take part in this "road" building. All done with taxes and revenue provided by all of us. After World War II president Eisenhower proposed the building of the Interstate Highway System. With the federal government supplying the majority of the "Grant" or seed money for these needed highways. One of President Eisenhower "selling points" was the need for "defense" reasons. The Interstate Highways system was built with each state building managing there own roads. This government program in my opinion was one of the best things ever done, benefiting ever person in this country!
The internet was also initially funded by the federal government and for military reasons partially. The internet is now just like are highways needed and used by all of us in some way. It is almost impossible to get anything done without it! What would happen to our highways if private enterprise ran the highways. Think about those petroleum companies that make the highest profit margins in the history of mankind, indirectly already controlling those highways at the pump!
I'm not a fan of "big" government and I certainly don't like anything going on in Washington right now. IMOP this internet neutrality issue is a bunch of "smoke and mirrors" maneuvering of politicians. That will only benefit those politicians that are the power brokers (on each side), only going to cost the rest of us. Does the internet need government regulations? YES, but it should be done in black and white, with full disclosure, with all of us benefiting.
sry BB, but gotta disagree here. I think the internet was funded and developed by University's. The interstate system in Ca. I agree is great, but have you seen it lately in most other states, its falling apart in many cases on 100 year old bridges or older. Chicago, Detroit ,tri cities are all one big pot hole dotted with a little asphalt here and there. just what government regulated Net will be in a short time. My opinion, hope Im wrong but, the pest predictor of future preference is past preference. I was also in the Radio business when it was strictly controlled by the FCC. Now under government controll mearly all radio is controlled by the fcc and 3 corporations.

I am confused. I thought Al Gore created the internet. Now I have to question the honesty of Brian Williams and other media reporters because something is not right is Kansas.
And BB to tell the rest of the story, the interstate highway system was suppose to support the landing and take off of military planes every so many miles. Because of funding issues, modern repairs do not meet this requirement. European standards would meet this requirement, but ours do not. Anyone want to guess who is responsible for the decline in standards for the interstate highway system. By the way the idea of an interstate system was stolen from the Nazi's who stole it from the Romans. Just another opinion.

I agree with Olddude. Taxes are always supposed to go for roads, but they never seem to... or they go to fixing roads that weren't broken. The highway going past our place has been worked on over 10 times in the last 15 years. Yet, an equally-busy highway south of us hasn't been fixed in over 8 years. When a pothole became really bad, they threw some asphalt on it and a couple of cones.
But the highway near us- they tear it up every 2-3 years!
Governments can't fix a sandwich, much less a problem!

Junkfreak - Hawaii's interstate serves the same purpose as the interstate system in the continental U.S. It was created to move supplies quickly from military positions around the area in case of invasion. If it had remained a state highway, Hawaii would only qualify for a reduced portion of federal funds. Although it does not connect with other states, classified as an interstate allowed for more federal funding, as well as federal control of the system.

All of the bridges that travel over i95 were raised higher a few years back , it was a precautionary move in the event we had to move tanks . They would clear under the bridges on the back of big rigs in the event of a invasion or other domestic problem .Quote:

Second rebuttal - Two important men in the history of the internet are: J.C.R. Licklider "Lick" and Tim Barnes Lee (Not Al Gore). Both of these men are in the Internet Hall of Fame (yes there is one and Al is in it). No single person, university, company or government invented the Internet. As with most everything it evolved over a long period of time with many inventions and developments. If we wanted to split hairs we could give credit to Thomas Edison, Samuel Morse and Alexander Graham Bell (only a few of many). Work and development of the Internet took place in other countries besides just the USA, England and France had a lot to do with early development. There were several Universities that are also responsible for the World Wide Web as we know it today. The leading universities were: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California Los Angles, University of Stanford, University College London, University Southern California and Harvard (there are many more). Corporations had a huge part, companies like: Rand Corporation, AT & T Bell Laboratories, Xerox, BBN, Digital Equipment Corp. IBM, and Telenet (again just a few).
If it wasn't for the United States department of Defense the internet would have been a long time coming. DoD spending on the development is in the billions of dollars. It started really under President Roosevelt, at the start of World War II. Really took off in 1960's in the DoD agency Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA and layer DARPA). This government/DOD agency developed ARPANET, the first computer network, in that a large mainframe computer was connected to other computer terminals at various locations (a network). This agency and universities funded by ARPA developed most internet protocols, programs, devices and practices for the Internet. (FACT).
Lets all do a Al Gore and take credit for the development of the internet. As it was you, me and us that developed the internet. It was our money. For the most part the internet is another American invention. I don't like the way our government is governing at all. On the subject of Net Neutrality I only know it should be available to all of us, with no exception!
BB - Thank you for the history lesson. I mentioned Al Gore with tongue in cheek not realizing he had anything to do with the development of the internet. I always thought he was taking credit for something he was not involved with. I owe Al an apology. The lessons we learn on SMF.
Al Gore is probably the most important politician in the development of the internet. The "Gore" bill passed in 1991 was the start of high speed internet for all (sorta). He was instrumental in releasing the "Governmental Control" that allowed free enterprise (companies) to make the internet available to all for a modest fee! It was after this bill that the Internet "took off" and by the end of that decade in almost every home in the country. That small fee, is not so small anymore and the price of being "connected" is no longer cheap!
Al has "cashed" in in a big way too!

I just had to comment on this, though. Check out the wiki on the WELL (The Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link). Wiki bills it as "one of the oldest virtual communities in continuous operation". It was started in 1985 by Stewart Brand (from the hippie-ish Whole Earth Catalog fame) and was where John Perry Barlow (lyricist for the Grateful Dead) and his buddies met up before starting the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It was also "a major online meeting place for Grateful Dead fans" in the late '80s and early '90s. I got my first email account as a college freshman in 1988 and, while I was never a member of the WELL, I was participating in online Dead-related forums by 1989. I remember at the time thinking that the WELL was some sort of San Francisco digital mecca of everything technologically groovy. Funny how that's now ancient web history...Quote:
