All-
I'm enjoying the conversation- as odd as it is to say, I find it a little reassuring that people can still discuss a topic from different points of view and not be at each other's throats.

I just had to comment on this, though. Check out the wiki on the WELL (The Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link). Wiki bills it as "one of the oldest virtual communities in continuous operation". It was started in 1985 by Stewart Brand (from the hippie-ish Whole Earth Catalog fame) and was where John Perry Barlow (lyricist for the Grateful Dead) and his buddies met up before starting the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It was also "a major online meeting place for Grateful Dead fans" in the late '80s and early '90s. I got my first email account as a college freshman in 1988 and, while I was never a member of the WELL, I was participating in online Dead-related forums by 1989. I remember at the time thinking that the WELL was some sort of San Francisco digital mecca of everything technologically groovy. Funny how that's now ancient web history...
And yes, there's the pr0n. Sex sells, dontcha know?
cheers,
