I've heard that GoDaddy will purchase names that are searched for on their site, and will then call them "premium". Another thing that turns me off about them!
Remember, decent is in the eye of the beholder. The more tools you have, and the more experience, the better your site will turn out. I can build an entire website in Notepad, but I can do much, much better with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. But, it depends on what you're wanting to do with the site.
Man, I write large.
Seriously, though, don't buy the domain name through the designer. Go to a site (GoDaddy, Gandi, Namecheap,...) and buy it yourself. It's then yours, not theirs. Otherwise, you're basically "renting" a domain name. Why would you do that?
Check the E-Mail plans. With the Gandi site, I can forward up to 1000 E-Mail addresses. With forwarding, it dumps into my personal E-Mail box, but tell me, what looks better:
info @yourscrappingcompany.com, or studmuffin86 @yahoo/gmail/hotmail.com?
Just my $0.02. I'd better stop before I go broke!
