Looking into a Free Web Host, Any Suggestions?

    Looking into a Free Web Host, Any Suggestions?

    I've tried searching, I know I've seen it here somewhere. I recently lost out on a big load of e-waste because the person couldn't find anything on line about my work. I've set up a basic LinkedIn account but can't decide who to use for a web page. Can anyone give me ideas/suggestions/experiences with any of the free hosts? I'm not really willing to put much money into it at the moment, I just want something to show up if they search for me specifically. Any info is much appreciated.

    Godaddy.com has plans that are affordable. You want to make sure that who ever you go with has a good reputation. You don't want to make a web page, put forth the work, and then the up time is awful, or they have issues all time. I have also has dealings with bluehost.com

    You can buy your domain and then set up a blog that is free with the domain name going to the blog.

    the domain registration is $1 the first year then a little more after that.

    I use godaddy also. Seems reasonable to me, but I don't handle that part of the business. My business partner does. Some people call him cheap, I call him frugal, point: its affordable. Can't really afford not to have a website if want to grow. My 2.

    I'm a part time web developer. I used to use GoDaddy exclusively, but I refuse to use them after their many "screw-ups". The last site I did was with gandi.net. I can't speak highly enough of them. The service was great, and the price was too.

    Web hosting is $2.50/month if you buy a domain with them, and the domain cost me $14 per year (With free private registration).

    I spent a little more money on the domain name than I would with GoDaddy, but the hosting was so cheap that it's actually cheaper. Their customer service is much better, too.

    I've heard great things about Namecheap, too. The private registration was huge, and that's why I went with Gandi. When my other GoDaddy sites expire, I'll be moving them to Gandi.

    Thanks all for the replies. When I started scrapping I honestly never thought I would need a website! Still can't believe I'm gonna do it. With a full time job already I don't even know if I'll be able to keep up.

    I supose if you want to goo the free and cheap route you could go with a subdomain hoster. For me, I'm with X10 hosting. Their set up as <username>.x10.mx. I also run other sites through another company called 3 Jelly, who is also free. Your site with them would also have to be <username>.3jelly.com. 3 Jelly's cloud hosing while X10 uses a vps thread. Both are ad free, which is nice(neither have pop-up or pop-under ads either). 3 Jelly offers unlimited desk space, video uploads, etc.. while I believe X10 is a max of a gig of disk space with limited video/image/file upload size. If you decide on 3 Jelly hosting let me know so I can refer link you(ten refers gets me a free domain name).

    Just my cents on the free side of things.

    I have a guy on craigslist making me a website for free and I only pay $3 for hosting. You need to know how to code html to make It on this host, so he's making it for free since he wants work for his portfolio. Go on cl and look around. Vista print has $15 per month websites plus custom domain is about $20 year but those offer templates and easy website builder tools. They also look ****** like mine does now, so I decided to have a pro make mine.

    I've used GoDaddy for about two years. A bit more $ than some of the other options, but it's been reliable and you can do a lot with it.

    I don't know how much advertising you do, but a website is, for the most part, free (at least for now). Traffic is easy enough to come by with a little work. I pay over a thousand dollars on the verizon yellow pages a year and maybe $60-$75 on my website advertising per year. Get a decent domain and put together a static HTML page with some meta coding and just let it work. If you need a little help, PM me and we can talk about what you need. I have the pages already set up and would just have to insert your info. If you wanted to be nice, you could buy the domain and hosting from me (I have a godaddy storefront under the domain ForaName.com). It is not my drinking beer money, but I plan to work on it in the future and adverise and see if I can make it make me some $'s. Either way, get a domain, put up a wepage with contact info and a description of the crap you want to do, and spen the $5? $6? a month to have it hosted with you own e-mail addys and include your website in your other promotional material.

    My beef with GoDaddy is mostly with the CEO and their policies (Like PIPA/SOPA), and the elephant hunting, and the.....

    They're sites are usually up, though. There was a major Gmail hiccup with them last summer. Clients of mine weren't getting E-Mails. I couldn't edit server-side scripts, either. That's not good for what I'm doing, but for this site, it's probably a moot point.

    I love Gandi, but that's just me. If you pay a designer, do not let them buy the name. Otherwise, they own your .com address (Or whatever extension you use). I've had customers who have had to pay over $500 in "ransom" to buy the name from them. Buy the name and the hosting, and then hire someone. Of course, a $1000 website will look nicer than a $50 one, but a cheap site will get you up and going. If you're weary about hiring, GoDaddy does offer Website Tonight. It's basically drag and drop designing.

    A website is a huge step towards credibility, and is huge with branding. Go for it!

    Well I am really surprised at how to put it in a nice way penny wise and dollar foolish you guys are, I can understand the part timers not wanting to spend any money or a few dollars a month on your website, and for those reasons you will probably remain part timers, we are in business and it is a great business if you run it like a business, we are all businessman, not having a website today is doing your compatation a Huge favor.most company's when needing any type of service do a web search to look for a vendor in there area so no website no new customers. I have multi websites and spend lots of money on search engine optimization, to drive the traffic to my business, there is more to running a profatible scraping recycling business than cleaning some aluminum door frames come on fellows smell the coffee. You must spend money to make money.

    I totally agree with 1956. Being "cheap" if I may is not a way to run a business when it comes to customer service and advertising. I wouldn't use a business if it doesn't have a website, if you don't have a website in some people's mind it shows a bit shady in areas and not worth pursuing. I hate calling and asking 100 questions, if they have a website to answer them I feel more secure about it. You can get a website for next to nothing if you do it right. just don't make the mistake I did by buying a .co website instead of .com because it's a bit cheaper tons of people tell me I have a typo.....

    Putting my web designer hat on,

    Anything that isn't a .com is worthless in my mind. You can brand enough to make it work, but a .com will be the standard for a long time.

    I also agree that appearance is everything. I build quality into my sites, not speed. But, if you're part time, forking over $1000 or more may not be a good option.

    The biggest thing though is to make sure that you own the domain name. Otherwise, you're basically a hostage to the web designer. They can do pretty much whatever they want then, since the name would be their property.

    I'd have to agree. I provide 3 Jelly web hosting for a virtual club but link/mask a godaddy domain so it appears to be a dot com. I would've snagged a dot com for myself when they were on sale after the super bowl but our site's imprinted on business cards and everyone I deal with knows the site so in my eyes, it doesn't make sense to create a dot com to appear professional.

    Yes and no... You can make a decent website for next to nothing. You can use MS Word and make a page you like and save as a webpage and you will have a rudimentary webpage you can throw on a host. Most ISP's have some webspace associated with the account. A dotcom name and point the name to resolve to the address of the page you uploaded. Company name, address, phone number and some pertinent meta data at the top of the page. Truck signs and a storage area might be a better use of money to start out.

    Dotcom is the most desirable in my opinion... The catchier the better, the shorter the better. Be creative and just try out all kinds of thoughts. If you find one you really like, BUY IT! I have looked at names I liked and went back a day or two later and they had been sniped and offered for sale. Not sayin', just sayin'. Not sure I agree with the "shady" sentiment, though.

    If you buy the domain name, the company you purchased from will resolve it to any site you want it to, and you will pronbable get one e-mail address to use with the domain name as the me@mydomainname

    I've heard that GoDaddy will purchase names that are searched for on their site, and will then call them "premium". Another thing that turns me off about them!

    Remember, decent is in the eye of the beholder. The more tools you have, and the more experience, the better your site will turn out. I can build an entire website in Notepad, but I can do much, much better with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. But, it depends on what you're wanting to do with the site.

    Man, I write large. Seriously, though, don't buy the domain name through the designer. Go to a site (GoDaddy, Gandi, Namecheap,...) and buy it yourself. It's then yours, not theirs. Otherwise, you're basically "renting" a domain name. Why would you do that?

    Check the E-Mail plans. With the Gandi site, I can forward up to 1000 E-Mail addresses. With forwarding, it dumps into my personal E-Mail box, but tell me, what looks better:

    info @yourscrappingcompany.com, or studmuffin86 @yahoo/gmail/hotmail.com?

    Just my $0.02. I'd better stop before I go broke!
