Some opinions on my current situation.

A friend of mine is a head guy for the school district in our county (5 or 6 schools). He tells me he has about 5 pallets of E-waste that they give away to the metal guy I give my cases to. Right now I'm trying to talk him into getting just the RAM out of it and splitting the money with him. But I was thinking of a way I can get those 5 pallets and scrap them. Now here problem I don't have any room in my garage in my, I have a Chevy S10 as my truck ( I might be able put a pallet in the bed.) First I have to see what kind of E-waste I don't want to get 5 pallets of printers. Maybe HomeDepot I think has a truck big enough. And rent a storage or the guy that wants to help I can rent his garage, to process them. What I do know I am going to have to do more research to make all these numbers work. Any idea's would be great.

A large UHaul truck(3 bedroom apartment size or so) or a straight truck from Home Depot, Lowes, penske, etc should be big enough for the pallets if normal size an stacked right.

Make sure you got a lift, or dock if using a pallet jack. Ramps suck with pallets. LOL.

Brighter minds then mine might have better ideas, but I'd rent a straight truck with a lift if it was me an I could still make a profit.

    YMMV

You are looking at 5 pallets of school e-waste, you will definitely need to worry about getting on and off what ever kind of truck you will use. Now that S10 you have should be able to pull a trailer, you could rent a U-Haul trailer but you will need to make 2 trips, unless you are able to put a 6X12 enclosed behind your S10 and off-load the pallets into the trailer, but then you need to worry about the weight, I loaded a 6X12 from U-Haul to the gills, half of it was whole towers and the other half was general e-waste, and it was definitely over weight and my full size suburban felt it.

If I were you, I would talk to the school guy and see if you could do things a little different and just start with 2 trips or so with a trailer. It really shouldn't take all that long to break it all down. 5 pallets should only take a couple days for break-down and turn in. Trailer would be the most cost effective. When you rent a truck, sure its 20 bucks a day + mileage + gas, it all adds up. Rent a trailer for 20 bucks a day and its just the trailer, and rent an enclosed one and break down in back of it.

Since you are working a deal with the metal case guy, can you come to a deal where you get the escrap and he gets the cases?
It might mean that you are adding uyour own waste metal to it (to make up for the lost weight)

Since he's got a way to transport stuff and store it, and makes his money from Iron.it might be worth it.
I find there's no money in Iron, but there is in my time. Like, IF I add time to the Iron, there's money in it.....

All in all, not making money in my Iron and letting somebody else do it, and make their $ from it, leaves me more time to concentrate on nonferrous.

The only problem is someone else figuring out that they can make money from what you are doing, and then taking your source..

(I found, 3 CRTs, a DVD player/screen combo, cellphone, digital camera, 4 set top sat boxes, two laptops inc one charger, today!)

Make an offer to buy the pallets. Money talks, free guy walks.

Offering to split the money with your friend could be insulting and might be viewed as illegal.

Rent the truck find a space or rent the truck for a couple of days and break them down inside the truck. When you are done you can drive to the yard on the way to return the truck.

I own 3 Ryobi drivers and each has a different bit. I purchased the 6" long set of bits at harbor freight. One of the Phillips head bits from that 6" set works great for reaching in the tower and removing the screws of the mother board.

By using 2/3 drivers I am able to work way faster with far less frustration. Good luck, Mike

here in SA, i would just hire temp labourers
either give them a fixed amount for stripping all the boards etc out of the metal
    or
i would give them all the metal in exchange for their labour & i take all the ewaste for myself

Great suggestions here for you. It seems that most of the schools around here auction all of that stuff and it goes for way more than scrap most of the time. It would be a shame for it all to go to shred.

If i was in that situation. I wouldn't rent anything. If you can make multi trips (same day) just remove them from the pallet, arrange them in your bed of the the truck. You should be able to get more than a pallet. Get straps, use the pallets to hold the stuff down. Take home. Un load them, back of your house if you have to. I would strip them immediately, throw case back on the truck and take to scrap yard or to your metal guy. Way I do things is I offer to take everything, even the printers, that helps to get them. But I can remove the boards quickly and turn the printers in at my yard as shred. Hope it works out for you. Good luck bro

there should be multiples of the same machine. group them by case before breakdown and do all the similar ones at once. much faster that way
Currently looking for a job in or related to scrap/recycling. Relocation is possible for the right offer.

I would take a THOROUGH look at these computers before you proceed with anything. As mentioned above, schools almost always auction off anything of value. If they are giving them away, I would be willing to bet you are looking at 5 pallets of computer cases with nothing in them.

    Schools are the worst.
