What do you do besides scrap metal? - Page 3

Just before turning to e-scrap I was a full time writer for the internet...I was one of the people that helped websites gain rank in Google by writing SEO articles for their websites. I still write one every once in a while for a good client that gets in a bind. But it is really not my bag anymore....I got tired, after 6 years of doing it, of sitting in front of my laptop and just writing all the time. Not to mention the fact that there would always be someone out there that did not pay and then that was a major hassle.

Make a new article for there website an have it rank on top letting people know that they don't pay? I think that would make any company pay up....and fast...

I am a retired US Marine, and second banana in my wife's flea market business. She sells used video games and equipement and general household goods. I have kidney disease and have to do dialysis so I am very limited physically. I just enjoy trearing things apart to see what they are made of. I mostly strip wires and disassemble motors and other small items.

I have read a lot of posts in this and other threads and I am very impressed with the number of members who are/have eliminat(ing)(ed) their personal debt. Its great when your money is yours. Best to all and thanks for all the information and inspiration, Mike.

I graduated with a degree in construction management in 2008 right when the construction industry went down. I took a job from a family member who owns a sanitation company and love it. Besides metals, I sell things I find in the garbage and do housework when somebody close needs something done. I also till gardens in the spring and remove snow in the winter.

That is one of the many ways that I have actually gotten some people to pay....Others had their sites shut down by the hosts until payment was made. I do have to say that 90% of the clients that I had paid in a timely manner or were at least willing to let me know when they couldn't. It was that other 10% that really got under my skin.

I work at Mcdonalds 30+ hours a week and a canoe rental about 15 a week in the summer. scrapping is something i do when i can between school and work. i would hope that someday it could be just working for myself scrapping but with so many people doing it now i fear it will stay as just a once a month type thing for extra cash.

No way man! You put effort to create a professional and quality business with hard work and determination........ you can make this "part-time" gig your lively hood and be successful! Don't dis yourself when you're so young dude. With all the scrap that's available there's NO way you'd get nudged out so easily if you put your mind to it. NEVER go down without a fight.

I work at a window factory

Fix and sell motorcycles and snowmobiles in my spare time, work for a farmer in the spring and fall, and work at a welding shop when I am not farming, and run a small scrap business on the side lol.......oh and tutor children at our local school in the evenings, busy busy lol!

Scrapping is just a hobby for me. I am an AutoCAD Designer that designs commercial and industrial skylights.

I can do almost anything and not afraid to try anything. If I can make a living on it, I will do it.

My main gig has been selling used books online but that's been getting tougher: fewer sales and more difficulty in getting inventory.

I've also been selling my dumpster finds through garage sales with limited success. Now branching out into Craigslist and Ebay.

I've been writing erotica for years and am now selling it as ebooks. More money has been coming in with each passing year. Have a couple of non-erotic novels in the works and a how-to book.

I've written a lot of songs but haven't made any money... yet.

Focusing more on my metal scrapping now, at least for the short term, and applying some of what I've learned here. Dumpster diving is one thing you can do anytime anywhere and, more often than not, retrieve something of value.

Hey, Great thread, I really enjoy getting to know a little more about everyone.

I am in IT security at a big healthcare company. I presently scrap for extra money. I seem to focus more on e-scrap not because I want to but because I have a little more expertise in that area and it seems to be a little less competitive for now. I also do some cars because I have a few mechanic friends and they give me cars that can't be fixed and I do all of the work and split the money with them.
Things I would like to do more of:
1. working my way up to bigger and bigger deals like the auction sites or buying out buildings etc.
2. demo-ing or salvaging
3. treasure hunting
4. Gold refining or establishing a relationship with one.

I drive the bus at a local nursing home. Wifey is a nurse there. It is the best job ever. Unfortunately, it is part time and low wages. That is why I scrap and sell stuff on E-bay that I find at garage sales.

Taxi Driver at the moment. Ex British Army. I'm trying to save money to pay to train in Close Protection. That's the main reason I started scrapping. I don't take days off (apart from when we go travelling) and like to stay busy so when I finally start working overseas in CP Iwould love to carry on scrapping in my time off.

Between working full time at an autoshop, fixing cars at home, and scrapping. I am a very busy person! Sometimes i have to let friends use my truck to drop a load for me.

Full time business for me now. Previous business in residential design/construction went down the tubes. Besides salvaging brass, copper, ss, and aluminum I have also salvaged other things. A friend of mine in Florida and I scrapped an old boat. Stripped all of the ss, pulled the engine and outdrive, all fittings and the trailer as well. Kept the fuel tanks to try to sell but have not had any luck with those yet. Scrapped an old house trailer down the road from my house and have picked up old equipment from a local golf course community. It's gotten where if I don't have a pile of metal laying about to sort and grade I get nervous. Other than that, spend time with the family, fish and play the fiddle.
