I own a investment firm http://www.millenniumcapitalcorp.com, my scrap metal/junk company, and soon to be back online an auction site similar to ebay.com, but cheaper pricing.
In less than 4 weeks I'll be a retired government scientist. Have really gotten frustrated at the waste in government. Results/reward is not based in real world economics. Now working on surviving by my own wits without the office politics. Been blessed so far!
I am a Professional Land Surveyor for the Missouri DOT. i just recently picked up scrapping and am amazed at how much extra cash a guy (or girl) can make. I didn't expect to get hooked but the extra cash is nice. If the business keeps coming in I could see myself doing this full time.
Funny ... I was just thinking the same thing today, I was wondering what everybody else does when they are not scrapping.LOL that's pretty funny I would of forgot though ... Well, I work at a scrap yard ... lucky me right ... not really It's the 5th most dangerous job in the nation. I grab what I can when i'm traveling to and from work and its cool that the two go hand and hand I just need a truck which i should be getting soon ... I cant wait!!! After that i plan on getting snow equipment and possibly some landscaping equipment wish i was a mechanic cause landscaping equipment comes through the yard like clock work all we have to do is ask
Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.

`I work at a Government Shipyard in Kittery Maine as a Painter Supervisor been there 25 years , I see my career there ending soon , I figure in couple years there will be big time downsizing , I have collected easy scrap like Copper for years but I learning and branching out
Scrapping is part time for me. I also work part-time as a professional organizer - work with people organizing their stuff (commercial or residential) including working with hoarding challenged individuals (ever see "Hoarders" [A&E] or "Hoarding, Buried Alive? [TLC] - we're on several episodes. The scrapping actually originated with my boss with the organizing and I warmed up to it. I also work part-time for a suburban Milwaukee chamber of commerce and fix/tweak computers & audio for relaxation. Whatever it takes. :-)
Postscript - - I am fascinated with the diverse background of everyone here. One of these days, maybe there will be a "scrappers convention" somewhere. LOL
As my name implies I am a ptscrapper and I have a full-time job hauling mail 3 days per week(if you call that full time) but i make about 45k per year doing that and on my days off i look for cars to resale or to scrap, lately though ive found that reselling to buyers looking for cars is very profitable, but then again scrapping is too if you know what you're doing.

No i dont have benefits because i work for a small contractor but its all good though, because i am blessed to have a job.
I was a college recruiter before I went into copper processing. If you would have asked me if I was going to own a business that dealt with medals and recycling I would have told you that you were nuts. Now I can't imagine doing anything else.
Chemistry teacher by profession and a landlord. I went travelling in 2007 for a couple of years and since i've been back i seem restless and like working for other people less and less even though I love my job I also feel restricted. Lots of nice holidays but only at times of the year its double or more to go away. Played sng poker to make extra cash p/t for a few years and even gave it a go full time for a while but the stress was too much for me. Since the whole fraud debacle and I lost access to my account and money (only few hundred bucks for me as i saw what happened in US and had a feeling it was going to spread. My brother still has 10k in there though :/) it kinda took the shine away and i've not played since. I've always like making a little extra cash on the side to pay for a holiday or 2 a year so i've moved over to scrapping to fill the part time slot. Looking to try to work for myself in the future though its always nice to have the teaching to fall back on.
a bit of history...
Qualified Auto mechanic 10 years, then worked for Land Rover as a field service tech, then went off and crewed for a few racecar teams around Australia, got married, then had a Snap-On Franchise 5 yrs, (remember that the company always have the power!) last 12 years in direct sales for Makita/Dolmar, then an Australian tool company, but was over the stupid hrs, high pressure and travelling all the time, so chucked it in, and now I drive a bus for the city. Work nights, and love it...leaves my days free for scrappin'!!
Grandad was a picker, Dad was/is a picker, I guess you are born with it some times... Used to sell 90% of my finds/picks/scrap on ebay, but now cant be bothered with demanding buyers, tyre kickers, non payers, paypal polotics, time wasters etc..
Scrappin is a hobby/part time income for me.
The best thing is that When I load up my rig to go to the yard, I know exactly what I wil get for it before I leave the house, and not have to wait 7 days and 'hope' the auction goes o.k.. CASH ON THE SPOT! thats how I like it!!
Got 2 kids and the have the pickers gene too! Their mother hates me for that
"roaming the streets, looking for treats"
