So I called up the other scrap yard, and asked for prices, then they asked what I usually get, I told them and they are prepared to match their competition and more!

Well done! I should give this a try next time!
I wondered about that - kind of like grocery stores matching competitors coupons. The yard closest to me is lower than the main one I use so this is a great idea!
I actually tried that with my local yard. They know as well as I do that another yard is paying more, but it's about 15 miles further to drive. I asked them if they could match it and they just looked at me like I'm from outer space. Didn't hurt to try though!
Exactly. What I do is the closer yard (20 mins away) which pays less, will get my steel (.10 lb), aluminum (.60 lb) and motors (.35 lb)... Everything else I save up for the yard that pays better but is 45 minutes away...
Also if you live in a small space like myself ( 900 sq ft apartment) .. I cut up all my insulated wire into 3-6 inch strips....then box them up with smaller boxes... makes them a hell of a lot easier to store.

I think that's what I'm going to be doing from here on out. Got a place to store it now, so keeping it for awhile won't hurt a thing.
I think you will be more satisfied doing it like that.
Exactly I drive 100 miles to take my scrap in, that is the closest yard and its in a city and there are 2 other yards there as well. So I am going to get the best price I can lol
There's a difference between bartering and bargaining, boys. Just sayin'....
Both good skills to have.
Same here. For carbon steel I haul to a yard that is @ 70 miles round trip. For the good stuff like copper and brass I haul @ 115 miles round trip. Their copper price is usually .55-.70/# higher. Plus they buy yellow and red brass where many others simply buy "brass".
Wow, I'm glad my yard is only a 24 mile round trip and 10.5 of it is highway. The price is the best in a 75-100 mile or so radius. There are companies that come from FAR away to go to this yard. It's crazy the towns I see on some of the trucks, I don't know or heard of and I look them up and find out its like 80+ miles away.
There is a guy that is real close to me, probably 15 miles round trip but I won't sell to him. He has a really funky scale set up and won't really tell you what he will pay until you get there. Went one time with a car and other stuff. He says, pull the truck on the scale, now move forward to get tounge weight, now move forward to weigh trailer. Not sure about that set up. Plus, it's a real hassle getting in and out.
It's sketchy to say the least.
Well I found out the yard closest to me will match prices ONLY if its large quantity. Someone was there asking him about that last time I was in this week so that saved my asking about it. And he won't match steel prices since he has to ship it out being the middle man. so, never hurts to ask.
I've got you all beat!!! lol.... My yard is less than a mile round trip for me... actually... from the edge of my driveway to just pulling in to their parking lot is almost exactly 1km.... lol......
being seperated from my wife for the past couple years, I am living at my parrents house.... I am now finally in the market to buy another house and hope to be in it by the end of the year..... with that said, the side of town I am looking at and is most afordable for me will still make the drive to the scrap yard less than 10 minutes away... and thats going thru city streets....
