Assuming you have a truck already, you don't need $5000.

You give me a reliable truck and a map and turn me loose in any decent sized American city and I will get by. In some cities, I'd do quite well, in fact. Sure, you could spend 5K getting business cards & websites & whatnot, but you'll get more business with a solid application of busting your A$$ than you will with any website.

Out of clutter, find simplicity. --Albert Einstein

Depends where your starting from, but if you're currently driving a car, I'd put $4500 into a serviceable used truck and $500 into a used trailer. Those are the only two items I use every single time I scrap.

    No kidding!

I'd go on a 2 day float trip down the Illinois. Camp, fish, swim, light stuff on fire, whatever!

Some of the money needs to be earmarked for buying inventory...$1-$2K at least.

You nailed it on the head but I would earmark it for 3 months and no employee to start. All in all though that was the best advice

Agreed you don't even need a building.....just a garage or a basement...No employee....Hire off craigslist only when needed......Pay cash for day labor and use sparingly....Buy some stuff that you can try to re-sale but also has scrap value in case you need to liquidate some funds........I buy computers and refurb as many as possible but if I can't fix em I can always cash out in scrap....Same with metal furniture, tools, etc......Don't over exert yourself as 5000 won't go far........I have spent that in an 8 hour auction

Any of the car/truck hybrids are fetching premiums now. The Ranchero, El Camino and I believe there was one other if I'm not mistaken. A guy down the street from me just sold one he's had for years, for 22k. But it was in mint condition and mechanically it sounded like a raped ape, meaning it sounded lean and mean.

So true, few start out with much of anything, or wind up leaving with much of anything more ; ) hahaha

You asked what i would do with 5K so i told you.

    1. I need a building i have run out of room at my current location.

    2. The amount of material i receive is too much for just us. We will need an employee.

so in other words a building for 6 months / bills and an employee.

I have dropped 5K in 30 mins let alone 8 hours. So you can jump down from you high horse.
