What your scrap yard does - or doesn't do - that keeps you coming!

I have finally decided to quit using my "old" yard, 5 miles away because of these reasons......#1) The crew that used to work there have now been replaced with
non english speaking workers that dont know the difference between extruded aluminum and cast aluminum...#2) When you "drive" over the scales, you can NOT see the weight of your load (is that legal?)....#3) sweep?? notta, woke up this morning to a flat. 2 screws that I know came from there because after leaving I heard a clicking sound in my tire that I thought was gravel. Cant be patched cause they are on the "edge",ruined a tire that had 20,000 miles on it (not even half wore), the non-english worker person backed me into a mud puddle which of course you cant see the crap laying in it. So my new yard that loves computer waste, sweeps the area constantly, Knocks the brass and copper off of a water heater, for me! that I picked up on the way, pays 10-20cents more on most metals, has a free lunch give-a-way, and puts me on a list that pays better than the average guy that brings in computer scrap.....I WILL NOW DRIVE 30 MILES TO THEIR YARD AND TAKE ALL OF MY SCRAP!!

We have a big magnet attachment we add to our forklift to reduce tire damage in our yard. I strive to give the customer the best service I can and I give advice and tips about scrapping. I have told many customers about this forum as well. We do not do any free giveaways or promotions, we give highly competitive prices, the customers see the weight on the scale at all times as well. Real scrappers don't care about free hot dogs or wheels to spin or dice to throw. They want to get in, get out, with the most money in their pocket. We are straight up, keep the yard very clean, courteous at the same time and it is working.

My closest yard (5 miles away) stopped me as i pulled in the other day and gave me a price list. That was strange. They've never given us one before. Always had to call daily and ask for prices. Well, all their prices had been cut almost in half. #1 copper used to be $3.30 lb. Now $2.00. #2 also $2.00. Every price was cut dramatically. They added a comment on the "price list" that the reduction in prices is due to a new law in Louisiana that requires them to hold all products for 30 days before they can move it.
After much searching the only law I can find states they must hold it for only 10 days. Also This is the only yard within a 50 mile radius that has cut their prices. Soooo, they are now my "old" yard. We used to have to wait in line for 30 -45 min. because they had so much business. All last week every time I passed they had no one waiting to pull up on the scales!
Case in point: don't under pay us, don't lie to us!

I use SA they are the best yard I have ever been to. Most yards I went to in the past would charge me tare for the littlest things like if I didn't pull every bit of epoxy off the copper from tv yokes I'd get charged tare, SA never does this. Also I can stand right next to the guy who is adding up all the weight and look at the computer screen as he does it, so I know exactly how much tare they are taking off for my containers. The best thing about SA is they will sort your metals for you, for example the last time I went in I had like 3 pounds of cast alum 6063 accidentally mixed in with my old painted alum siding and the guy pulled it out and put it in a separate container. All other yards I have gone to would of just left it mixed and made money off of my mistake. There were even people coming in with all there metal mixed up copper with brass, alum with iron, etc. and SA had workers separating it out for them. Ever since I found SA they have been the only yard I go to I'll still call around occasionally to see if other yards have better prices and they are usually the same or lower but never higher.
