    Buying and Selling Junk Cars

    I've been searching for a thread on scrapping cars but have not found one.



    I personally do not scrap cars at the moment. Moving in a couple months into a house with a real nice 28x28 shop around back. Has a huge steel I beam built in to use for hoist.

    Once I get there I plan on starting pretty small, find a car dolly for cheap and post a craiglsist add and ride around and knock on some doors of houses that have junk cars. One of my first projects when I get there is going to be to build a engine test stand. If I find a motor in a crappy car that still runs decent I can scrap the car and still sell the motor. Biggest thing with selling motors is people want to hear um run first so engine test stand will be a must.

    Until then I'd like to hear what the great folks here have to say.

    I am buying a car dolly $400 i still owe $300 (paying it off) I foresee $$ in cars

    Last car i took in $884.00, stuffed with small bits of metal from under the cutting table from a machine shop. My cars average $550.00, I always add extra weight to make the trip pay.

    When I first say that you made almost $900...I was about to say.

    I take cars in as I get them, since I have no place to really store them. At any given time you can get between 250 to 300+ dollars.

    A big car lot here in town told me he would sell me some of his trade-ins for $350. each, but the best yard for taking cars is 40 miles away. $260. a ton, I would need to haul at least 3 at a time to make any good money. Otherwise I'm just scraping by and wearing a truck out.

    Not even. That's a gold mine deal if you can adequately scrap everything and have stuff to resell. I got a 2001 Volvo the other day. Motor seized. I paid 200 for it. I took after it with a gas powered cutter and some insight. I sold the interior on ebay, cut out the wiring harness, cut the alternator and starter, made off with the motor and radiator, junked the rims, and then got a small exotic on the cat. I made out with close to 1200 off the aluminum from the motor, reselling off ebay, the cat, and the auto body price. Never even had to tow the car as I just stomped it with a back hoe and took it in the back of the truck. Tell you what, if you want to pm me, being as we're almost in the same location, we'll see if we can't come to a good arrangement on how to junk cars out proper and make you some cash. I don't have an all the time source, but I can junk a car like no one's business. Besides that, you can make your money back on the cats if he's got some foreigns. There's possibilities.

    Search button must be broken. I know this topic has come up several times.

    As for me I pull it all, or as much as I can.

    Engine, transmission, battery, battery cables, wires/harnesses, wiper motor, tires if they're in good shape, starter, alternator, aluminum wheels, radiator, evaporator, oil/trans cooler if applicable, condenser, cat, window motors, etc.

    Last car had an aftemarket radio so I pulled it (Pioneer CD)

    Keys go in the brass bucket.


    I thought my next toy was going to be a plasma cutter, but I think a winch might be better at this point.

    I have thought about putting an electric winch on my 16ft flatbed. How big do you folks think I should go to easily pull cars onto the flatbed?

    10,000 lb - minimum. It's the vehicles with flat and no tires that'll cause you to need it.

    I use the cheap 10,000 lb super winch on my trailer, if the car or truck has been loaded with extra scrap no tires I use a snatch block attached to the item being winched onto the trailer, run the cable though the block and back to the trailer head for an anchor.

    Really stubborn stuff gets double blocked, another block at the trailer head, run the cable through and back to the item being dragged on where it is attached, double blocking slows the line speed of the winch increasing the pulling power for every block added into the rigging.

    If something from under the car gets snagged on the rear of the trailer, it's coming off by brute force.

    Big difference in knowing something and helping other people so that they can be in the know too AND someone who thinks they know it, but aren't fooling anyone but themselves...IMHO Gustavus, you have NOT worn anything out around here. Now the other G could stand to just listen for a month or six.

    Oh man your so right,,,didn't even cross my mind. I'm so used to messing with old domestic vehicles... Thanks for the tip, so basically a test stand would be good for my own hobby motors,,,might have to put that project on the back burner now.

    Are most newer domestic and foreign cars equipped with super heavy aluminum intakes or are they still mostly using steel/iron?

    Wonder how many newer cars are equipped with aluminum heads? Heck even aluminum blocks.

    2nd car I scrapped was an '89 Dodge Dynasty. It has a good size alum intake on it. Same with the 3rd car, a '95 Dodge Intrepid.

    In addition the current vehicle I am tearing down has aluminum transmission and transfer case (AWD Safari).

    If I am not mistaken, most of the smaller cars/imports have aluminum blocks, but you're going to have that pesky iron liner.
