Had an idea, might backfire, might not, what do yall think?

I recycle TV's and CRT's for a living, as most of yall know. I've been mulling around an idea, of putting an ad up on CL, offering "free drop off" of tube TV's. Here's the ad i posted.

Here at OLD SCHOOL RECYCLING we are doing our part, by correctly processing old tube tv's, and computer monitors!

You can drive them all the way to the dump, and waste $30 in gas, or you can drive them to the OLD SCHOOL RECYCLING drop off spot, for free!

We are conveniently located in Meridian, Crossroads are Meridian, and Cherry LN. Just 3 miles from Boise, and 5 miles from Nampa!

    WHAT YOU CAN DROP OFF!

    Old tube TV's
    Computer Monitors
Big screen "projection" TV's. *Their is a $5 fee for these to be dropped off*
    Old computer towers

WE ALSO OFFER PICKUP OF YOUR TV'S!

We will come to your house and pick them up from the curb, or driveway, for a fee of $5 *in the Boise/Meridian area*

Please call OLD SCHOOL RECYCLING at 208-389-8849 for location, and more information!

Thank you and have a great day!

What do yall think? Any and all criticism is welcome!

It could work. I have thought about doing the same for appliance drop offs. My concern would be getting calls of where I am located, and it being a thieving scrapper looking for a place to clean me out.

About a month ago I saw a guy on the Boise CL advertising his address of where to drop off stuff. Wouldn't surprise me if some scumbags took a trip out there to see what could be had.

You might want to email ComputerScrapper to find out some info on his tube reclaimer he built. He was telling that it separates the 2 kinds of glass, and he has buyers for both kinds at $140. a ton. I guess it was pretty cheap to build.
If your wanting to really hit the TV/monitors hard, that should do it. The ad sounds good to me,,,But what do I know?? LOL

here we had several drop off sites with big signs, couple of years ago every time I drove by one there was always 2 or 3 appliances sitting there, in the last 6 months I havent seen one appliance at any of them, unemployment here is at 14% or better, and the scrappers # are growing like an ant colony.

I think that is a good idea. The only downside I see is craigslist. I don't think you get enough exposure. The only people that are going to drop the stuff off are the people that cruise craigslist. You have to get to the masses and the non craigslist viewers in my opinion to make it work big.

We have a local electronic recycle company that runs radio adds for drop offs or for a one day collection event. They usually fill 2 tractor trailers or more and the traffic is usually baked up to get to them. Yes You are going to have more costs for advertising but you could get a big bang for your buck and get to the people that don't even read or care about craigslist.
I know there is a lot of competition out there for scrappers but it amazes me to see how much more can be gotten by just with the right advertising. I go to our local landfill a couple times a month and they have a container for steel only that is always full. The thing is people are bringing this stuff to the landfill and having to pay to get rid of it. I also see pallets of car batteries there too. So somehow we need to get to these people and I don't think it is on craigslist.

What are you doing with your leaded glass. This seems to be the hardest part to get rid of. I know I ve tried. What I have found out is that most scrappers are putting the respocsibility of this material onto another business by way of taking advantage (not in a good way) of free drop offs at landfills or thirft stores. The companies that provide these drop offs are than on the hook for the glass with no recoverable costs that would normally be gotten from the metals that surround the glass. I continue to recycle small amounts of these but only do so when I know I have an outlet for my glass. So if you have found an option for this material I would love if you would share that with the group. Keep on scrappin.

This has been gone over, and over, if you would just read thru the old posts.
But Goodwill will take them if you keep the tube in the plastic case, they are working with a company that recycles them.

Yes the goodwill route is not taking advantage of them. They have a partnership with a recycling group and dell computers I believe it is. My local goodwill manager tells me thank you every time I bring in a load of gutted CRT's. She was telling me they get paid by the pound for what they put in the recycle trailer. The faster they fill it up the more often they get paid. So I take it the program they are working with takes all things into consideration and pays them a far lower rate by the pound then they would get themselves if they seperated the materials. They just throw everything in gaylords and load them into the semi trailer.
