You are kind of naive. I've already been convicted and went to jail for a brief time for a crime I didn't commit. After an experience like that I don't go around acting like a sitting duck.
Well one each person would need a business paypal account.
Then when you get hit with the Fee's on that nice $1000 load. You'll be off to another yard so fast it would make their head spin.
PayPal fees mainly apply to sellers, who pay a 2.9% transaction fee on the total sale amount plus a $0.30 fee per transaction

Only the person getting the money needs a Paypal account, person paying can use a credit or debit card to complete transaction.

I would gladly give 2.9% + .30. I mail my scrap yard checks, so that would save me .44 right there, plus the convenience, immediate access to the money and the less hassle involved. I use Paypal for other business transactions and really prefer it to any other - including cash. It's free and easy to set up. All you need is an email address which everyone here already has.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

The yard I use most (Behr) photographs all vehicles and plates when you go across the scale. They ask for ID on non-ferrous loads. They never used to ask on ferrous only loads, but I think they are now. They have started offering a frequent customer card that you scan when you drop off. This way they don't need to collect your info each time.
I've also used another local yard a few times that doesn't ask.

I am happy that they ask. I've been on the opposite end of metal theft. I tracked our equipment to the yard that it was taken to. Thanks to their professional practices, we got a conviction against the thieves.
Unfortunately, the world we live in has a lot of dishonest people. The yards have to protect themselves and the people who are victims of scrap theft. Also, the more that yards self regulate, the less the state will have to.

Seems to me to be a smart idea. I have always been paid by check so it wouldn't affect me at all. I take that back I used to get paid in cash by a scrap yard once when i was doing a job in SC. I couldn't believe it when I went in there and they handed me an envelope with over 12000 grand in it. Had to drive 500 miles home with it. I was nervous the whole time always kept checking to make sure I had it. Would have rather had a check.
I like how some people say just go to another yard or county. What if the county you want to take your material to is paying the most and they pay by check or you go outside the said county and take less money for your material and travel more. Is it really worth the time to not wait on the check? If you are above board and not a thieve why would this really affect you. I do understand the point though its like that commercial I keep seeing for get paid cash for your long term court settlements. Its my money and I need it now. So I see both ends of the spectrum but the wheels have been in motion on getting paid by check for about the last 10 years. I remember when number one copper was a 1.07 in 1995 and I was 14. Its been a long time coming IMO.

I agree Piston, I think checks would cut down a lot of unsavory competition for street scrapers.
Even without a checking account people can still cash a check.
I like having all the info collecting and picture taking! If there is AC theft I don't mind being asked where I got my scrap, I am ready with a list containing customers address, name, phone number, and serial numbers for each unit I scrap. My a$$ is covered!

We pay check, wire transfer and paypal. Very seldom do I pay cash. I just don't like to keep a lot of it laying around.

Even if a yard pays ya cash there is still a paper trail...they aint gonna pay your taxes on the money...The yard i deal with only pays check or cash card for atm..and with the check you have to wait at least 90 minutes before it will clear to cash it.

The yards around here switched from cash to checks 3 or 4 months ago. Me? I don't mind. Just swing by the bank and deposit it anyway. Was doing the same thing with the cash. Hell, they even gonna 1099 us at the end of the year. I really liked that too. I thought it would have slowed down the competition some. Especially the "unsavory street scrapper". You know, the tweakers and thieves, etc. Not so though. They just take their check, cash it at the bank it's written on and go on their merry way. And the competition is as strong if not stronger than ever.

It looks like the council will meet again in november concerning the ordinance. I think it will discourage some of the scroungers as well. Personally, getting paid by check will not slow me down either.....I still enjoy receiving cash for now! Im sure at some point it will be nation-wide.
I read this whole post...this is a good read.
Now from a yard point of view. Checks and or using paypal or bank wire is nice as you can easy track the money. Cash is a bit harder to track every last cent but easy to use, No computer is needed and being able to put cash into someones hand puts you on there good side right away.
P.s a well known trick..if someone only had a $100 load its best to hand them 20s and 10s than one 100 dollar bill..they see the more bills in there hand and feel like they got alot more than just one dollar bill that = the same amount.

Let the back yard buying begin. Quick put your ads up on CL and pay cash at half price of the yard. I mean seriously outside of a sting operation where they actualy try and do police work instead of passing stupid laws to make it look lke they are working. Can any of you tell me what the visual difference is between a non stolen AC radiator and a Stolen one is? I mean you park to brand new cars in front of me and ask me to tell you which was stolen. I know I couldnt do it unless the stearing column was busted.
