Scrap yards in Knoxville area

We're really new to scrapping and are assembling our first load.
Man, you read, read, read--and then when you get out there and
start breaking things down, you realize how much you don't know! :eek:



Had our first "break down session" yesterday.

Anyway, we're also trying to decide on a scrap yard here in the
Knoxville area.

Not many listed--that we can find, anyway.

One of them is evidently a huge operator with one of its locations here.

Below is what's on their site about what they DON'T take.
This includes the capacitors and transformers,
We have salvaged a few from a microwave, etc.
What would you recommend we do?
They are a pain to break down and not even sure they'd
take them that way. I'm sure they know what they're looking
at...don't want to deal with ticking someone off right off the bat.

Free-flowing liquids, gas, oil, paint propane, water, refrigerants, etc.
Hazardous, toxic or radioactive materials of any kind
PCB-containing materials (ballasts, capacitors, transformers)
Dirt, debris, or trash of any kind
Steel drums without certification of cleaning
Closed containers under pressure (propane/gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, aerosol cans, etc.) These containers can only be accepted if stems are removed and opened (punctured, drilled, cut) so that containers are no longer pressurized and verifiably empty
Computer monitors, keyboards, printers
Ammunition/Ordinance scrap
Mercury switches

I am in Knoxville....Take all your clean steel to PSC they pay the most....They will buy the transformers as motor parts...I will buy your computers if u would like as well as monitors although I don't give much for them

They will take ballasts, caps and transformers that don't contain PCB's.

Thanks for the replies. We're still deciding on escrap-how we want to deal with it. We just broke down one of our old towers (or our version of breaking it down lol)-just to see what all's
in there!

How do you know which of these don't have PCBs???

Yeah PSC is very paticular....No trash or plastic but once you get to know what they take they are ok plus they pay most....I use them when I have clean steel or appliances but there are few others when I want to unload some other crap

Okay, so they won't take things that I read people usually put in their shred pile--like metal with plastic still attached-that sort of thing?
Where do you recommend taking that?
