Unfortunately, as we all know, it does not help. The thieves are still going to steal that stuff, and then dump it in the woods if they can't find a buyer. Or sell it to someone who does not care that has the legit reasons to have said scrap.

I want to know what scrap yard is buying sewer grates without asking questions. That is where part of the problem lies. I suppose there is some guy that does municipal street work that has a reason to scrap these and brings them in after any rework job. Times are tight so he gets some punks to go around and gather some up for him. Who knows?

Sorry, it just boggles my mind that someone will steal and scrap something that they may get $20 for, but costs the home owner, insurance company, or city $1,000 or so to replace.

I hate thieves. And the people that buy from them are just keeping the problem going.In my life I have known many good old fashioned regular law abiding citizens that would never steal. However, someone comes along into the bar parking lot selling a truckload of brand new $1,000 generators for $300 that "fell off a truck", and they all go running to the cash station to get the money and buy one. If no one would buy them, then they would not have a reason to steal them. So the buyers of stolen goods are just as bad.

A guy I used to work for told me, never buy stolen tools or one day you will end up buying your own tools back. He followed it up with a story about his tools getting stolen one night before having a big work day the next day. He went to rush street and lo and behold his tools were being sold there with HIS social security number engraved into them. The police could not do a thing they told him. He bought them and went to work.

NOT buying anything that is stolen (or even smells of it) does help the situation.

Figures the only thing florida is worried about is beer kegs. Injunjoe how far are you from marion county we have no such legislation here.

I hate when new laws are passed to help enforce existing laws. especially when all it does is infringe on the rights of people that aren't breaking the laws. It's already against the law to steal. Law enforcement and legal, quit playing with your shiny new M16s and political aspirations and do your freakin job!

I'm convinced in part that the reason so many useless laws get passed is so they can claim they're doing something about it. Doesn't matter that it won't curb the problem, just so long as they can say "hey, we did something about it".

The 64,000 question: Have the laws reduced metal theft?

I think it's created a booming underground metals market more than anything else.

For the record, I am not blaming law enforcement. We all would like to see thieves caught and prosecuted. I am talking about law after law that does nothing to solve the situation. How many laws do we need "DO NOT STEAL!". 1? 5? If we put 10 on the books will thieves then go "oh, okay. I'll stop"?

I said before I don't know what the answers are, but more laws and suffocating regulations aren't it.

IronPirate, nothing will stop a criminal. But at least it works as a deterent, a way to clamp down on their movements and a way to document their actions. It makes it harder to unload the booty, they will eventually just find another enterprise to exploit, this I know. This is egg on our faces as scrappers though. Example: Some of my patrol guys stopped a suspected theif today. He had a 5 gallon, metal bucket full of railroad spikes. We have a rail road that runs through our jurisdiction that sustained a lot of damage from hurricane Irene. Material had been dropped off ever 100 feet or so along the tracks for repairs. This subject decided to not only steal the spikes, but the 5 gal metal bucket to carry them in as well. He layed some legit scrap on top of the spikes then crumpled the top of the can inward so you could only see the legit steel showing from the top. Off to the scrap yard he was going. Worst part yet, he had been doing this successfully for over two weeks!!! Scrap yards should not be accepting these items, but they are. Why? When the rail road supervisor showed up, he explained that thieves have actually been damaging sections of track in an effort to remove the material that they are creating a grave risk of a derailment! I scrap. It helps supplement my salary and helps put the food on my table for my family, pay my mortgage. It helped put me through school. It keeps my self employed,father-in-laws head above water when there is no work. For some of you guys here, scrapping IS IT! This is your bread and butter. I know some laws really do suck, trust me. These laws do help us grab these scumbags by the shorties and get them dead to rights.
