should out right liars be banned for life ?

this post may seem to be off thread but it is not.

this is ,for the most part, a learning forum. any one who has been in the scrap business for a short while, understands, this is a dangerous business, considering what we deal with every day and the methods and tools employed. that said. There are times when we all make mistakes or are wrong in method , and there for we all give info from time to time that is proven wrong. we are after all human.

but it has reciently come to light the possability that certain posters may well be telling out right lies.

maybe the lies at this point are harmless, but, at what point do they become dangerous.

We have many newbs weekly who rely on the info gathered here. It is my humble opinion that any one found to be giving info of ANY kind, found to be an out right lie presents the potential, for giving info that can be harmfull if not deadly.

It is my opinion these people should be absolutly banned from the forum period, to prevent potential harm to other members and the forum it self.

I noticed that some of the new members might well be re-invented older members. Only admin would know this for sure.

Tough one. Some may post info thinking they know it all or what they are talking about, but really don't and are too stupid to admit it. Some may post bs just to feel important and give dangerous info. Either way the BS is usually caught quick and the correct info posted.

I own a forum myself and it is always tough to know what some peoples intentions really are. I sometimes find it tough to post stuff in the right words so that it's not taken the wrong way.

All forums have trolls and idiots, and in my experience they usually get run off in the end.

All that said if it can be proven that someone is posting just to cause trouble, then by all means drop the ban hammer on them.

    Just my $0.02

From the rules: 11 - Condoning illegal activities in posts/threads on the forum is not allowed. Example, snipping air conditioners rather than evacuating them with proper equipment, illegally dumping and/or burning your 'hazardous waste' to make a quick buck. We will not allow this and if you're caught condoning such activities you'll have a ban placed on your account.

I delete posts of an illegal nature if I see them or they are reported. Unethical practices are more questionable although I have deleted the more unethical ones. Posts such as telling how they fill appliances with dirt or water are usually left and someone will post a retort. Posts such as "gas escaping from TV and computer monitors" I see as simply needing educated and I would suggest posting a link to the MANY threads where this has been discussed. Also, you may be talking about "lies" other than illegal/unethical issues. Rather than calling the person out, please report the "lie". It may really be a disagreement or misunderstanding. Regardless, public bashing and arguing gets nobody anywhere.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I'm a moderator on a wooodworking forum. If someone knowingly posts a dangerous practice the post would be deleted and the person might get a one week timeout. The second time would be a permanent ban.

We have the report post icon here (!). I would suggest using that rather than starting a thread like this one, but that's just me.

I am on the other side of the coin. I like to see these threads come up for discussion just to get everyone's view point. Especially when there has been a rash of this sort of thing lately.

Parrothead you are probably right. I really didn't mean to stifle conversation on the subject. It's just that there is a difference between someone lieing and someone posting dangerous or unlawful information. If someone lies about living in a mansion when in fact they live in their mother's basement and sit in front of their computer naked, I really don't give a rat's azz as long as they don't post pictures of themselves. LOL!

Some folks may have a habit of posting their assumptions about how 'things are' or 'how something is done' without researching whether their assumption is really correct. I agree with Devo, in that some people may want to sound like they know more than they do, by posting questionable information.

My question is, if an ignorant person speaks with authority, does that make them a liar or just more ignorant?

Theres also a big difference between "You can do this, this way" & "I can do this, this way".

Just because I can do it, dosn't mean anyone else can do it.
    Unfortunately.

That is quite alright as it is yet another opinion that ends up forming how things are done around here. This is why I like to have these things discussed in the open....until of course someone gets all bent out of shape about it. Thanks for your input as well as everyone else's.

This is also how we get to know each other and form a better community. For example I now know that you are into woodworking. I did not know that before.

I think that it is very important to let these kind of post stay and for everyone to be able to read the all of the post from the more responsible scrappers who no doubt will step up and let everyone know the right way to do it.

Ultimately, you have to find your own way. And we call it engaging in disinformation. Please be politically correct. You might hurt said liars feelings.

As far as I am concerned, if you find one you get the other. They come hand in hand. In my life dealings I have pretty much found that liars are thiefs and thiefs are liars. No difference. I have never been able to find a seperation of the 2. Plain and simple.

hi everyone, i saw this thread in the recent posts and i decided to take a look and see what was going on. i know that i am still new here and i appreciate all the help and information that i have been taught/given. At first, i thought that this forum was "too good to be true" in a sense that i was worried that i had run into a big scam or something. It is a dangerous business that you are in and it's a shame that it has to be that way. Unfortunatly people have exploited a career (or hobby) choice for their own personal gain and i don't blame you for being concerned on who's twisted ears your help could become victim of. Anyhow i am on a roll tonight obviously but i guess to sum it up - if the forum members here become to skeptical of newcomers then people like me with a honest reason for wanting to learn could be shut out but i also think that it's impossible to weed out these "liars" easily. I believe that they will show their true colors quicker than they think they do especially to a collection of very intelligent caring people that i have come to know you all as. Sorry for the rant - Hope i stayed close to the topic...

Agreed, Julie. It doesn't take long for someone to trip them up. I (for example) may not know what's being put out there isn't true, but somebody does. The trick is being able to tell which to believe.

The core group here has some of the best sniffers around and I think Julie's case is testament to folks here being able to see a genuine need for a quick education to get jump started and were happy to help out. Then there's the guys that claim to be something yet can't determine the value of a dime or how to pick it up off the floor.

Hey i found a dime but its across the shop floor, stuck in some gum. Do you guys think its worth going over to get it...I mean its a long walk over, then I gotta clean it off. Oh, BTW, I hear they're made up of 10% unobtanium - how do I refine that and is there anyone who will buy it from me?
