God is great, scrap is good, and people are crazy
Its better to be scrapping and thinking of God than sitting in church thinking of scrapping
Not sure if it does not come up on a search so I will answer this. Generally #1 is the same diameter of a number 2 pencil lead or larger. Also it is clean of other metals etc. The real answer is what ever you scrap yard says it is. No joke each has the ability to decide what they want to grade. I do suggest you read some of the old threads because this has been covered repeatedly. Mike.

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked
miked pretty much hit this one on the nail.
I will add that the yards around here take ALL insulated wire as just that. "Insulated wire". No #1 or #2 grading on this. Pay-out is somewhere around $1.10/lb right now I believe.
AMERICAN BORN, AMERICAN BRED! AND I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!!
Like said you must call your yard, some yards even have a #3 insulated wire catagory, or Christmas Light or comunication wire. But the #2 pencil lead size seems to work to get the #1 insulated wire price!
One yard I deal with grades #1 insulated if the copper is pencil lead, sold gore or braded #2 insulated smaller than pencil lead yhey don't buy computor ribbin at all. They buy cristmas lights if you clip all the light sockrts off at $.50 lb but some of the #2 insulated wire is finner than christmas light yet they payed me $1.15 lb yesterday. yeah it's up to the yard, that's why I deal with two or three yards.
