Pending legislation for Maine scrap metal buyers

Anyone who buys scrap metal for resale or recycling will be a Scrap Metal Processor and subject to this law - LD 1708.

You will need to keep a record of a government-issued ID of everyone you buy scrap from. You will need a signed statement that they are the owner or authorized seller. You will need to make ALL payments by check mailed to a physical address and record that information. You will need to hold all scrap metal for seven days before selling it.

So, I guess I will have to start paying by check for the brake rotors like I got yesterday - ten of them for $2.50. At least I wont have to carry around all that change I keep in the console. The question I have, though, is what about all the stuff I get that I pay nothing for or trades? That's more than 90% of my business.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

I'd originally said "yes" but ...

Quote from the Bill -- Scrap metal processor. "Scrap metal processor" means a person that purchases scrap metal for resale or recycling

I would fight that strong and hard...I bet the scrap yards know this bill and they do not like it as it will cut down on the amount of scrap they will be getting in due to the law.

Less scrappers = more scrap for you to sell. & you can buy cheap scrap from non registered scrappers & sell it at a profit.

It all looks like what we have allways had to do (here in NZ) anyway ('cept for the posted cheque bit, we still get ca$h.)
