update on 6000 IBM servers:

heard from my partner to day on the servers. he picked up 2 of them and is going to drop them off here when he gets back, turns out they are most all IBMs and weigh over 150 lbs each or very near it. Also here is some news to watch out for.

the servers are all from 3 to five years old, he asked why they were in such a hurry to change them sence they wernt that old. he was told they need to beat the new tecknology soon to be introduced by IBM and Intel. some new developement in CPUs that will make service on the servers obsalete, they were very guarded about what they would tell him, but we are dealing with a huge house hold name here every one would recognise, they would be in a position to get advanced info, we don't have. might pay to keep your ears to the rails.

I'll bet those have some good stuff inside of those, my last server had some 160 gig sata drives.

Well as an IT guy we start looking at replacing servers at the 3 year mark or at least building redundancy in the network. This is for things that are mission critical. I have 5 year old servers in some of my customers networks but they are for things that if they break I can do without for a day or so. If this company is as big as implied then 3-5 year old servers are definitely end of life for them and need replacing.

Miked is right though olddude you might not want to scrap them out because if they are functioning three year old servers then you can sell them whole for more than scrap value. I have three right now that I need to work on getting rid of in that same boat. One is a Supermicro Quad Core Xeon with 8GB of Ram just gotta find a buyer on it.

kEEP one of those 150LB servers for yourself and chain it to a wall in your shop. God help the fool that tries to rip it off. Bad backs for life are a *****!

I am already fighting to get him to scrap as many of them as I can. he is an IT guy and his natural instinct is to save them all for parts. he already has a 3 car garage full of neatly packed ram, copper heat sinks servers etc. I make no $ from what he decides to horde. As far as I can tell old servers are a nich market, and I cant find it, if any one has any info on that I woulde appreciate the help if I sell the server whole I still get my 40%. but my knowledge of comps and servers is limited to scrapping them. I know these servers sell new for $10,000 +.
