How do you Split the Costs?

I bought an old gas pump from a guy like 2 weeks ago and now he got a hold of me to help him clean the scrap metal off his place as well. I have NO IDEA how much scrapers charge to do this. He has no equipment to load, no trailer to haul with and can't help drag much since he has a pacemaker. I am wondering how much people charge to do this for someone else. He told me to set a price and to be honest I'M LOST....... I don't want to screw him over but at the same time i don't want to screw myself over either and have to PAY to help this guy. Could someone/anyone please give me some insight on pricing please. It would be my pickup, trailer, skid loader, time, gas/diesel and whatever else.

have him agree to cover your overhead and then give you a percentage of the scrap value after that... that way your overhead is covered and you are not at risk of losing money, and then you can negotiate to see what kind of light demo your time is worth, and how much value the scrapped property contains.

overhead being the cost of gas and potentially mileage or wear and tear on tools/truck/trailer

so the baseline is a fixed number and the labor becomes a percentage. thats what i do

If its all your labor and equipt then I would approach it that you can clear out what he wants gone and your payment is the metal you turn in. You have to get an idea of how much you are going to remove and find out how much your yard pays for the different types of metals. I would also be reading a lot of the old posts here quickly especially the ones on different types of metals and the beginners section.

If it's a limited help on his part I'd go a 65-35 or 70-30 split the bigger # being yours as your paying for fuel and your equip. also. The split being the payout ticket from the yard/s.

I asked the guy if he wanted to just sell it out for a certain price, but he said no (which might have been a good thing considering i have no clue on how much weight would actually be there). But I did call into my scrap yard and they said that if i am hauling in a good amount of loads from this place that they will give me dealer price (which is a good thing !)

We really need more information in order to give you a reasonable answer. If he has a line of old farm equipment you can do well at a 50/50 split. If he has a limited amount of half buried tin scrap then you really should be charging him for a cleanup. Just my $0.02.
If it wasn't for the $ in $crap, it would just be.....

The farm machinery he is keeping for now and i don't think there is any vehicles he is going to want to get rid of. It's ALOT of tractor rims, wire, bikes, tractor parts that he no longer wants/needs, there is ALOT of stuff that is not going to meet the prepared requirement. We have a 34 ft. gooseneck trailer and i can see the potential for probably 15-20 loads being hauled away, if not more. The grove is FULL of stuff and so are the buildings.

Okay with that info the deal is starting to sound better. If in your opinion you can get at the items and load with your skid steer then you might be able to offer a 50/50 after fuel expenses. You might be able to get the yard to drop off a roll off (no charge) for all the tin. You mentioned the word "grove" and I'm thinking chainsaw cause I've been there done that.

Do it has a %...however, to be honest, you are doing 95% of the work, so regardless, he most likely won't like it anyway. Unless, he just wants it gone.
