Hi, I joined the forum to get some advice. I'm a young and beautiful girl who doesn't want to be taken advantage of and ripped off. I hit what I consider to be a jackpot of barebright copper about 400lbs of itI know I need to strip the insulation off to get more money for it but its taking forever!

I too am fairly new, and posted a thread asking about a wire stripper. Try looking up reliable wire strippers it might come up.

Welcome to the forum. Bare Bright not only has to be shiny, it also has to be thick enough(at least the size of a #2 pencil lead). If it is in good shape and in long sections you will get more by selling it and you won't have to strip it.

Have someone help with making one of these and as far as being a girl, I think you'll have an advantage when you go to the scrap yard. They'll be falling all over themselves to help you. That 400lbs will become 200 lbs once stripped give or take. Keep that in mind.
You _A: turn in as is 400 lbs x your yards wire price. Saving you x amount of time to look for other scrap.
B: invest in a wire stripper deduct cost of it along with the weight you're loosing when you strip it. - The time it takes to strip it all down.
If you don't have other sources or this is something you want to do as a one time thing strip it. If you have other sources of scrap either hold onto it until you have the time and need the money to sell it or sell as is and spend all that time you would be stripping ( no pun intended)... Looking for other sources.
Do whatever will make you the most. There is only so many hours in a day/ week. Make as much of them as you can.

Welcome to the forum. First of all I think Russell is wrong, I have been getting 1.25 a lb. foe insulated copper,bare bright or #1 copper I get 3.00 per lb. and you'll get alot more than 200 lbs. after stripping. There is no way the insulation weighs more than the copper. This is how I strip my copper wire. Get a chair that has hard plastic arms on it. lay the wire across the arm of the chair, lay a sharp utility knife on the wire at an angle and pull the wire under the knife blade while holding the knife still. It's easy and fast once you get used to it, the more you do the easier it gets. Good luck and keep us posted on how your doing.

Who's getting 3$ or more a pound right now? You do realize there us a recovery rate which has yet to be determined. At best 90%, George. I may be under with 50% recovery rate, happyscraper. However, whobis getting over 3$ a pound anymore? At best 90% recovery 360 lbs the most likey scenario is what she has is 50 to 75% recovery. Prices in Jersey ate around 2.90$ at best.

I don't know what the price of copper is in NJ. I said I get 3.00 per lb for #1 copper and that is what I got last wen. 8-1-12 Then again I only strip THNN or romax, idk but I think the recovery rate would be 80 or 90%.

Most scrap seems to go up and down with the stock prices or gold prices.I heard that copper goes up when gas goes up is that true?

this is what I'm getting in the Baltimore area...(Maryland)....so it would definitely be worth your while to strip it...
$3.29/lbs for BB
$3.14/lbs for CU#1
$2.05/lbs for Insulated CU#1
$1.20/lbs for Insulated CU#2
$0.85/lbs for Insulated CU#3....
If you do the math...and have the time...you can see it's well worth your while...but you also have to keep it all coming in...

Read all the threads you can here...as I have found this forum to be essential in my day-to-day transactions (I am new myself...kinda thrown into the mix taking ownership of my yard) and get the mobile version for your phone...it helps if you run into problems negotiating prices...
