After 10 months I decided to introduce myself

My daily occupation is that of a tax accountant. I have been involved in tax work for approximately 30 years. During that time I have made many investments - both good and bad. However, the last two years of scrapping has given me the most pleasure and the most profit for the money invested. I started reading posts on this forum just about one year go. Finally, in November I registered. I didn't comment on any posts, but read the new posts almost every day. My wife had trouble understanding why I enjoy reading this forum. However, when I actually showed her how much I had brought in she changed her tune.

I have gained a great education reading the posts by Ewasted, Easy, Mick, Olddude, Gus, Hoss, PartTimeScrapper, KZBell, freonjoe, BurlyGuys, Mechanic688, parrothead and PistoneScrapProcessing. (and many others) Each person them has their own niche that gives me ideas and information that helps me make decisions about what to concentrate on and methods of doing it.

As you can guess, by my profession, I don't much time between January and late April, as I am working 80 a week during that time. After that though, I have much more time.

Success in many things comes not because you are the hardest worker, but are in the right place at the right time and know the right people. Thus, recently, I found myself talking to someone in the local county government. They related that the company that had been handling the ewaste for the county had said they would not accept any more shipments. I quickly asked if they had found a replacement. The answer was no. As you can guess, the county has a new vendor. (thanks to the education I received reading this forum!) It appears that I should be receiving something in the range of 10-20 tons before the end of the year.

Has it been worth it to lurk in the background and soak up the information in this forum? Absolutely. I also know that I better search the entire forum before I ask a question that has been answered before. I certainly don't want to suffer the wrath of the frequent posters!

Now, as this is my first post, let us see if I did it correctly.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. Yes you did it correctly. 10-20 tons of scrap is a lot of scrap, are you sure you can handle all that scrap and your job at the same time? Tax season is just around the corrner.

Welcome, numbers. As you've figured out, your regular profession is going to be a big advantage in the scrap metal field.

Welcome and good luck, cuz with scrapping you can't learn this from any book. Good old otj is the only way, you'll learn much here rest assured but the most of it you'll have to learn on your own.

Welcome to the forum numbers! A word of caution with your new venture: MAke sure you are on par with ALL local and state regulations. Your county should have made sure about your credentials and gave you any info you may have needed for compliance. All states are different of course but check out your states e-waste and hazardous waste laws on the state website. This would be a good start for you: http://www.kansas.gov/search/?utf8=✓...&commit=Search

You've definitely made a great start! Good job and keep on growing. Also, due to the nature of your work history, you will be a great asset to this forum as well! Thanks for joining.

[I] actually did contact the state and asked about regulations. I found out that I would qualify as a dismantler of ewaste and as such wouldn't need a permit. The county department gave me the same information. As long as I don't stockpile material for more than twelve months I am in compliance. Of course, let's hope I was given the right info!

Thanks for the story! I agree that this forum has become a staple in my daily viewing. I have learned much and I thought prior to this my 3 years of study was satisfactory for my E-waste business. I was wrong, but I am ecstatic I found this group. I recently landed a contract with one of the largest commercial property management companies in the Southeast. I have already unloaded 4 gaylords of E-waste in 2 months. Looking forward to growing with the forum.

    Cheers

Thats great! I wish Indiana was so nice!
