    Central Iowa

Hi everyone, I have been scrapping for about 8yrs now, started by working for someone where we did a lot of work taking machines out and gutting the Maytag plant in Newton Ia. Quit working for him and started on my own and was doing good then partnered up with another guy here in the same town that I had known for yrs. Now we have a small yard where we have a two more full time employees besides us. We buy from locals and also go out and do jobs anything from closing manufacturing businesses, gutting old hog barns, doing farm cleanups, grain bins, harvesters silos, and picking up cars and trucks when we get calls. We started out driving around looking for junk to buy and now we are to the point we stay swamped with people calling us to do jobs so I am very pleased with how everything is going. Glad I found this site, hope to learn some info and hopefully be able to help others with my experience

Welcome! My name is Mike. I live in Waterloo, IA myself. I only do computers and electronics. I have a computer store as well as a 6000 sq. ft. facility where I do e-waste.
There may a million better places to live than Iowa, but none of them are home!

Do any of you Iowa guys have a trustworthy scrap yard in the Sioux City/NW Iowa area? Trying to help my recently unemployed brother-in-law get started out there, but I'm not having any luck. Can jump to Nebraska or SE SD if we have to. Thanks.

Thanks guys. I deal with alter's in Waterloo for all my steel, average around 45 Tons a week, as for our metals we price them out weekly before we sell. I have been dealing with 3 alters yards here in Iowa and one in Omaha Nebraska and had good luck and been treated fairly. I do believe they have a yard in souix city also.

yeah alters is good a few i do locally but in either case depends on how much you have of course but most are willing to send trucks to pick up for large amounts around here i myself will do that when i have 10tons or more which is only a few times a year since i srap out of my car and am limited that way but most will pick up for free or just rent a roll off from some places usually $250 a month and will pick up and take out of what you have in weight that way no cost up front
