    Talking Hello from Central Florida!

Hey everyone! Just thought I'd introduce myself really quick.

I've been reading posts on these forums for a couple of weeks now and I've finally begun to get to the point where I'd sometimes like to ask questions or add to the conversation so I decided to go ahead and join up.

I became interested in scrapping because my boyfriend is a scrapper/carpenter. He does carpentry work when there isn't much metal to be found and he is very good at it, but he has told me that he really likes scrapping more. I decided I would go ahead and read up as much as I can on it so that I can possibly help him out. For now, I am getting pretty decent at spotting places to check out. Eventually, I'd like to help him out by scrapping part time or just doing pick ups on the weekend, especially if he has a job going on. I currently work full time in an office job. I have to deal with maps a lot which take a while to load on the computer. While I wait for them to load, I read the forums and educate myself.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge guys, I hope I can contribute too at some point in the future!

Welcome to the forum from a carpenter. I get a huge kick out of recycling and it's much less stressful then having to build things with perfection in mind.

Haha, yeah he is a bigtime perfectionist when it comes to building things. It's a large part of what makes him so skilled. As far as I'm concerned, as long as he is happy AND making money, I'm happy too. I've seen a lot on here about ways scrapping can be profitable and ways it can be a losing gamble. I'm sure that with both him and I working at it, we can get it to a point where he is able to pull in however much cash he needs scrapping full time.

It just takes lots of contacts. Make him up some cheap business cards and everyone you know gets one. It will take time. I still get a call every so often from last summer from hitting up yard sales. We did haul off of left overs, all the clothes went to a non profit (take the donation) the rest was scrapped or put back into service thru Ebay or Craigslist.

Welcome to the forum. Sometimes it gets rather slow but don't give up, as long as you work at it it'll pick back up again. Good luck.

Thank you everyone! I have been thinking about doing the business cards/fliers thing, especially after all the success I've been seeing others have on here. I've also started to just check places out for him so that anything outside of his usual stomping grounds becomes a possible avenue for money.

Heck, just yesterday, I found a place on my way home from work where he can get rid of his old tires for $1.25-1.50 each. He has about 30+ tires scattered around different stash spots that he wants to get rid of and I found the best price he's heard of. I also came up with 2 different people on here who buy old TVs in the Orlando area. He is about to get 3 storage units full of old analog TVs, way too many to keep at the house to part out, so I thought it was pretty cool that I could find someone who has the room/time/inclination to part them out on here.

Yeah, a couple scrappers on here are local to my area. They seem to do high volume processing of TVs, so they probably have a way to get rid of the CRT and get a good price for the wires and such they get out of the guts. I saw at some point one guy said he usually pays $2 each.

Our part of town garbage collection takes CRT on a certain day of the week. I hear kississimmee area does not take CRT. You can make money buying CRT for $2, however it is a lot of work and waste but based on the margins others say they make in my ewaste thread I think it might be worth it for the return. A $2 computer monitor is worth $5 that's a good margin/return. Computer monitors are the best usually.
