Greetings from Buffalo, NY

Morning All,

Just wanted to drop a quick note to introduce myself.

I made my very first scrap run this past weekend. It was just 3 old rusting bikes, and two 55 gallon drums that I had out in the backyard. I got $18 for about half an hour's worth of work, and it was really nice to clean up the place a bit.

Going through the process opened my eyes on the whole experience, and I realized that this may be a way to help pay down debt and maybe even enable me to start a business.

I just found this forum this morning, so I'll be digging around trying to learn as much as I can. There is a couple of scrap yards here in Buffalo, and I see guys driving around all the time picking up stuff from the side of the road.

At the risk of having stuff thrown at me, any suggestions on where I should start this new endeavor?

Welcome to the forum. I started by reading the old threads and staying up to date by reading the new stuff that comes through. Many things are made of multiple types of metals and knowing what is what and separating them into separate piles or buckets will increase your payout substantially.

Tip - Cut the next 55 gallon drums in half with a Sawzall and load them with small stuff. I've got several 275 gallon oil tanks and have cut up two so far and two more pretty soon. Put them on a pallet to fill up. Then use the forks on the tractor to load onto the trailer. You may not have a tractor and forks but you could throw half a drum on the pickup, then load it up.

There do see to be quite a few folks that run through the area with pickups stacked to the sky

Best tip is that every little bit adds up, often times faster than you'd think
