New here and to scraping. I am 65 (retried and bored, lol) and started helping my son at his heating and air conditioning business. He gets about 4 old heat pumps in a week that need to be scraped. I will have a lot of questions. As for now I am trying to find an easy way to get the copper out of the electric motors. Posts on here have been a great help as well as YouTube. Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.

there are videos on youtube that show who to extract the copper from those oil filled compressors, or are you talking about the fan motors?

HI Jg, Yes I was talking about the fan motors. I am having or going to make the wedge a tool to remove the copper. But thanks for the idea on the compressors. I did not know you could remove the copper from oil filled compressors. I will check out the videos.

Metalman, this is the best tool I've found so far for removing motor windings.
Thanks, Strange thing is I bought one in a pawn shop today for $2. I thought it would be good to remove the copper from the motors. Only thing is it has a hatchet on the other side of the "pick" end. I may have to blunt the hatchet so I can strike it with hammer. Thanks again, any hints at this point will be helpful.
Hi Joe. Like I said I bought a tool very similar. I also bought a rafter angle square. It was easier and worked better. You may want to try one. Inexpensive and actually takes less time and energy.

On the cu/al fin the fastest method to clean fin is to cut the copper loops off flush with an angle grinder with cut off wheel then pry the steel off with a flat blade screwdriver wear safety glasses and a face shield. The sawzal method does not save any time, it costs time in the long run.

Hi Larry and thanks. I do have a question. It may seem a obvious to some but to a newbi.......... I see scrappers on here talk about shred pile. We have a dumpster that we put our steel in that was supplied by the scrap yard we deal with. Is that considered shred? Thanks Dennis

Shred is what they call items that go through the shredder. It's the cheapest of the usual ferrous metals you'll take to the scrap yard. Some places refer to it as tin
