New to Site...Looking to ramp up scrapping in 2013.

Hi - just introducing myself as recommended. I am from North Jersey. I have done some light scrapping over the past few years make like $30 or $40 here or there. I had a few runs of computer scrap and wire which got me over $100. I am looking to take it to the next level in my free time in 2013. Started by grabbing two Dell PCs this week, so that is good.

I am restoring an old VW and have generated some scrap from that, so I can see the potential of gathering scrap from many different sources. In the past I have scrapped A/C units, wire from various sources, motors and transformers and even light iron in addition to other random things. I see when there are peak times of people throwing out things like lawn furniture and A/Cs and grab those as much as possible. Well, basically I have done alot of research to date on the various metals and do my best to sort and prep it before hitting one of 2 yards I go to.

Like I said, I am looking to cash in on as much as I can this year...why not, right.

Here is to 2013 and wishing all other scrappers/recyclers a prosperous year. I plan to be as active on this site as I possibly can.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Welcome from the other side of New York.

I just have a question for you: Are you certified to handle the refrigerants from the ACs?

Good question. I am not certified. One of the scrap yards that I go to will take the AC whole, so I don't need to dismantle it or cut any of the lines containing refrigerant. I get about $7 for a small window unit from him, but easily find them every few weeks. There are times in spring and fall when there are many out by the curb and I grab them.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Cool. Lucky you. My yard won't take them like that, the refrigerant has to have been evacuated. So I have to pass them up.
