So I'm a poor college student and it dawned on me the other week when I passed a scrap yard near me (live in NY), that I could maybe make some extra cash selling scrap metal. I figured I'd browse the internet to find some info and lo' and behold, I find a whole forum dedicated to just that!

I plan to do a bunch of reading and digging in the next few days, 'cause this would be a great way to make some extra quick cash on the side. Honestly, the idea of it is kinda fun, too. Makes me feel like I'll be in a post-apocalyptic world in a video game.

That said, anyone wanna give me some quick tips or pointers to start with?

Read and ask questions. What do you have for hauling (car, van, truck, truck and trailer)?

Only a car, so I'm going to have to find things like air conditioners, microwaves, and stuff like that. I can't take anything huge. Now I see why pickup trucks can be useful.

I've got two old TVs in my basement, are the insides of those worth anything? I've also got a bunch of old random junk in my basement, there's bound to be tons of metal to go around, just have to figure out what kind it is.

Check with your scrap yard about if they take things like air conditioners or microwaves. Up here, they charge to take anything with freon. And there is a HUGE fine for deliberately cutting a line to release freon into the air.

What about something like a DVD player? I was gonna just junk mine - these days, I either use a gaming system or my computer to watch anything, so the player just clutters my space. It's not too much material, but there's gotta be something there, no?

I've also got an old filing cabinet in the basement, do you think that could be worth taking there?

I can post some pictures of stuff, if you'd like, so you can give me a better idea. I really have no idea how much they're willing to take, but I assume most anything since it is called scrap.
