I am a long time lurker and have enjoyed the information on this site long before I was even interested in metal. It is amazing the amount of google searches that end up here.
I am new to the scrap industry, however not new to start ups and working for myself. My intrest in the industry is mostly on the hobby side as scrapping/recycling is a third or forth money stream for my family. What draws me to scrapping is it is something I can work on as I have time. Most of my ventures are seasonal. So I can gear up or step back as my time allows. I see a lot of opportunity in my area. I also have the advantage to store large amounts of scrap to be broken down over the long cold winter, as well as the ability to transport large amounts of metal.
The major disadvantages I face is the lack of a professional/ personal network being new to the area. Also the inability to devote time during parts of the year will make it difficult to plan and generate good suppliers.
