    Hello from the bay area

Hello everyone. My name is Tony.

Im new to the scrap industry. I actually haven't done any actual business in scrap. I'm still researching and gathering as much information before I venture any further. I'm looking to jump into scrap trading. Southeast asia is my target destination. I have a few buyers already, yet I don't really want get in over my head. I have a few questions in terms of buying and selling scrap. Is logistics any different on the west coast as opposed to the east coast say for example from Oakland, ca and Savannah Georgia. In terms of shipping routes, time frame, cost effective, break bulk vs containers for hms 1 and 2. Would I need to get a permit if I'm not a direct supplier? Or in the case of permit and say for example I have two different suppliers from two different states. Would I need to get a permit for each area? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Again this is for information and getting a better understanding of the field. Thanks for reading guys

Sounds to me you need three things. (1) a lawyer (2) a broker (3) a suply of about 50-100 tons of scrap per month. Good luck.

I think you have been reading about those big buyers/sellers overseas that are wanting to make you rich.
First thing you do is reach down and grab that B.S. filter and put it on, then whatever makes it thru might have some truth to it.
It can be a fast way to go broke. Personally, I would sit back and start learning the business.

Ummm, why would you ship from Georgia to the Far East, when Oakland.CA (big shipping city) is less than 30 odd miles from San Jose. CA.

Maybe I am missing a critical point, not explained very well ? Enquiring minds need to know though :-)

Well those buyers/sellers overseas are my close family members. Your right there's probably more than meets the eye. Just trying to get an understanding of the field.

Your right oakland is very close to me as is san francisco. I am pretty much in the middle of both. I was just trying to look at it from a logistics standpoint. Just cost effectiveness for example: If the source of scrap was from South America at a lesser price arriving in Georgia compared to the daily U.S market price in the oakland, ca.

Hello from the northwest suburbs of chicago.

I think on top of the 3 things mentioned earlier by happyscrapper, you would also need about 40-50 thousand square feet of warehouse, definitely one but maybe two warehouses, and if you are going to ship it from all over the world, save a few million a year by having your own fleet of trucks and drivers, heavy hwy permits, operation permits, at least for the states here. Oh and yeah, you got more to deal with the government and the export laws of ewaste. And once you get all that squared away, I'm sure you will have a never ending supply of crt's. That's if nobody has issues selling to exporters. Maybe a little far fetched, but not too far.

You might start out small and work into the millions, we all had to start somewhere.
    Good luck to you.
