Just trying to learn more about scrapping.

I just joined this forum to make connections, to get advice, and see if anybody has the same issues about scrapping like I do. I have been scrapping for about a year now. I live in Upstate SC and I am in the process of trying to start a R2 certified e-waste business and a CRT disassembly plant.

I do this part-time so I can be as busy as I want. Get out and network with people and hand them something to remember you by, business card, flyer, keychain, whatever. Anybody and everybody is a potential customer, you need to figure out what your niche is. Like was stated in another post, if 10 people scrap cars, find another score. Don't do what they do. All this won't happen overnite.

I try to "specialize" in ewaste but I don't turn down other items, like appliances, air conditioners, steel, etc.

Research CRTs for 5 minutes and see if you still want to start a disassembly plant. If you had the capital to start said plant, overcame all the OSHA and EPA regulations and had a steady flow of CRTs, you could still only milk 5 years at best out of that business model before your supply of CRTs dry up.

As far as R2 certification...have you looked into what this cost or the time involved with this certification?

Not trying to be a dream killer, just a reality check.

The people that survive and thrive in this business start small and have organic growth, do tons of research, put in countless hours, make numerous connections and are saavy businessmen/women.

Thanks for the advice. I have started doing some marketing. I have made some flyers and business cards. I have been going to different businesses. I have made a good connection with a company that buys and sales smart phones and other devices. They have several people that bring them things that they don't handle so they are sending them my way. If somebody has anything to offer I don't refuse it. To me everything has a value.

Your not a dream killer you are just being a realistic. I have researched the R2 certification. I am starting small right now. I am currently on long term disability from the company bc I have had episodes of passing out and the doctors won't clear me for about four months to return to work. The company requires me to drive and since I can't drive I can't do the job. I have been researching about the crt plant and dismantling in all my free time which is a lot. The main way I plan to fund this project is through grants. Since in SC there are not any plants right now I could stand a great chance. The location I have picked to start this venture is easily accessible to the interstate (I-85) and is a few miles from where they are building an inland port which will connect by railway to the port of charleston and has direct access to rail roads. The whole plant would include dismantling the crt tubes then would decaminate the glass then would crush the glass then I would be able to send it other recycler. Then after all the crt's run out I would focus on glass recycling. I would specialize also in making glass sand which is now being required in retention ponds and drainage. I am trying to do all the research I can.

Thank You to everybody for the advice. I appreciate everyone's comments and thank you for being honest and keeping me grounded. I always try to remember what my grandfather always said before I make any big financial decision; this farm wasn't made prosperous over night it has taken us 200 years to get this far but with every new day comes a new experience and a chance to keep it prosperous and there are no get rich quick things out there only the people who take their time to get rich.
