    Hello from the midwest

Hello all, somewhat of a newbie to the forum and to scrapping.
I've been doing lots of browsing in the old forums and will continue to do so. I am amazed at all the info I have got and look forward to learning more.

My father was a hobby farmer and recently passed away. By the time of his passing, his 'hobby' grew to over a 1000 acre operation. His father and grandfather were hobby farmers as well and needless to say, after three generations of farming, there is a lot of scrap metal ranging from buckets of old bolts to discs and plows that are too small/obsolete to a couple of large grain augers that have blown over and are bent beyond use on a farm. I had planned on helping my mother clean up all the property but when she told me she was considering paying someone to clean up the old machinery and other scrap, I gently reminded her of the value the metal could bring. She told me that I could scrap it and keep the profits for my work in cleanup. I am relatively young (34) and in good physical condition, but needless to say, I am in over my head, especially in dealing with multiple tons of farm equipment in somewhat inaccessible locations. Fortunately, the farm still has tractors with front-end loaders and lots of trucks and trailers to make the process much easier and safer. I am in the process of moving from Detroit to Southeastern Illinois to clean up the mess.

My regular profession is a social worker and I have turned into somewhat of a city slicker, but I still have enough 'farm-boy common sense' that I hope will help me as I learn.

I look forward to continuing to learn from the forums and maybe someday, actually submit something useful myself. Once again, a warm country 'hello' to everyone and I hope everyone stays safe out there, especially with the temps going up.

    Welcome from Indiana...

It would be great to see a few pictures of the vintage farm equipment before you start scrapping it. I might see a piece of Ford or Dearborn equipment that I just gotta have...

    Welcome

    from York Region ,Canada.

You could make a pictorial documentary of the entire operation and post on here as your first Thread.

It would be nice to see all the material that you have at your farm, and you could ask for ideas and know how to do it.

    Just a suggestion.

I will definitely be posting pics of the stuff. I am hoping that some of the older stuff might have some value besides scrap. It kind of breaks my heart to get rid of some of the stuff and would love to see it reused, especially since my main motivation is not financial. But, I am also a realist and know that I can't save everything just for sentimental value. Right now, I am escaping the heat wave for a couple days in Michigan but plan on taking lots of pictures over the weekend.

mmathen, Glad you found the best place for useful info here on the interweb.
You might check to see if one of the local yards would bring you a roll-off container, then all you would have to do would be to fill it.
Use one of the tractors with front loader and go around and fill the bucket with steel scrap and go dump it into the box.
If there's a torch available then cut up the augers into manageable pieces. When the roll-off gets full then they come get it and pay you.
You could do more cleaning and less hauling. Just a thought.

Hey mmathen, welcome to SMF. Good luck with your cleanup. be sure to watch out for critters nesting in that old stuff, and be careful about sticking your hands any place you can't see in to. If you'll research that stuff good enough you might do well putting ads on CL and just renew it ever few weeks. somebody will eventually come to see
