    Newb from PA

    Hi All!
I was lucky enough to find this great site while looking for scrap yards that will allow individuals to poke around & purchase metals. Right now I am looking for FERROUS IRON as I am currently taking a workshop on welding art / sculptures. (In the future I believe we will be using various materials when my friends & I work on projects together.) But for now while attending the workshop our instructor has indicated ferrous iron only.
As for me I have been an artist since I could hold a crayon and started putting things together as soon as I got my greedy little hands on glue. I was a graphic artist for many years. But my true love lies in the fine arts and especially arts that use my hands to build & create. Over many years I dreamed of sculpting & welding huge designs and I finally have the chance to study under an awesome artist. (Then afterwards I have friends & family who weld, forge, or other art or working backgrounds that want to create together. We already started designing our first piece. So, the excitement is growing around here.) I thoroughly enjoyed a day scrapping with my teacher but the group was so large we each got a very limited time on the yards. I could have spent days there rooting. But now, on my own, I am finding many places are not open to individuals. So, my snafu has led me to your forums in hopes of meeting others, learning as much as possible and in great hopes of finding anywhere within a 3 hr drive to scrap at. BTW - I live in PA but can get to DE & MD within 15 minutes. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
We are out to a nearby place right now but tonight I plan to dig thru the forums to look for any sellers to individuals.
Wishing you all a very scrappy day! ~Suz

Hey Suz, Welcome to SMF! I wish you well with your projects. If you have the ability to roam around through the country you might hand out cards and such, depending on how you wish to word it, a load of country scrap might just yield exactly the things you're hoping to find, as well as enough to sell and pay for the trip. Either way you go, good luck : )

Welcome to the forums from a sandbar of the coast of NC!

Can't help ya with what yards will allow ya to root thru their scrap, cause as Rob said above, most frown on it due to safety and liability issues. Rob has the right idea with rednecks tho! Usually have a pile of metal hidden away for that next project. Heh. Or at lest a huge barrel of beer cans..one could get quite creative with beer cans...

Sirscrapalot - I don't know any redneck that's not into fun. That's their middle name. "Red-Fun-Neck"! - Uncle Si of Duck Dynasty

Edit to add : no it's not my house Mech! Give me a few years...
