Hello all,

Another Mainer here, hoping to find some networking connection in my search to find used lead wheel weights. Have contacted a lot of local salvage yards, but most won't sell lead. With our lovely state having banned the use of lead wheel weights, and switching to zinc/steel it has been increasing difficult finding enough to keep me casting. Hopefully I can find some fellow Mainer's that might be able to help point me in the right direction.

Thanks Mick! I am located near the NH border too, and wouldn't mind meeting someone in the "Live Free or Die State", as I believe NH has not passed a ban on lead wheel weights...yet.

Lead has its reputation it's earned. Use sealed containers (5 gallon pales) mark them w/w and enjoy making good $$ reselling as weights. Lead is heavy and it's weight makes you lots of $$.

Think a battery. Little 36 pound boxes of gold. Put them three layers to a pallet and boom. 2800 lbs.

70 batts at even 10 each (steal for me) is $700 if you got for free. I don't. I'm making much lower margin. You can get as much as you can buy. Batts. W/w I love too.

Welcome! I'm in Southern Maine also, if you go on youtube there is a guy on there called mainejunker - watch some of his videos! He can help you with some ideas on how to get lead (I'm guessing you have seen his videos since you cast).

Welcome from PA. A yard local to me buys lead for 35 cents a pound and sells for .85, as a fellow caster, i hope you find somewhere to get more! Good Luck!

Well found an old garage that has probably 200-250 of wheel weight he said he would sell me for what the local yard pays. That will help out a lot. I am not brave enough to do the battery thing, but might try a scrapped sail boat if I could get my hands on one cheap enough.

I will ask around about wheel weights but last time i got a 5 gallon bucket over half were zinc
i get some fired lead from screening the hills at shooting ranges very dirty and a lot of copper jackets still attached don't know if it is something you would be interested in but if so I can save them up.

Thanks for the sailboat link Chris. I think that one might be a little large for my capabilities, plus I am not 100% how I would get rid of the hull demolition.

NHscrapman, I would be interested in used wheel weights if you come across some. If I can get them for around the same price my local yard pays, then I wouldn't loose out on the zinc and steel ones that wouldn't be useful to me. As for the bullets mined from the shooting range, I am not sure about figuring a cost per pound. I have seen MaineJunker on Youtube use a propane torch to heat jacketed bullets to separate the lead.
