New to the Forum/and Scrap Metal Collection - from NYC

    Hello,

i would like to introduce myself here: my name is richard. i am new to the Scrap Metal Forum. i am a 51 year old man, living on disability, here in NYC. recently, my partner (whose name is david and is 31 years old) and I started to collect scrap metal with the intention of selling it to scrap metal yards. we have only just started to roam the streets of NYC, collecting abandoned televisions and otherwise abandoned items that contain metal that can be harvested, collected and sold to scrap metal yards. we, my partner and i, have literally just started doing this over the past month. we don't even have a name for our 'organization', and we recently just purchase our first hand truck (a convertible model that his mom purchased for him). we haven't even figured out if we have the right tools for this job, and already we have figured out that we need to rent a storage unit nearby as my apartment is the size of a small hotel room (small!!) and we need space to work in, or store things until we figure out how to dismantle them. but, we want to learn and to do things properly.

WOW. This whole business is a complete departure from what i had ever done in the past - i had been working in 'white collar' professions (9 to 5, suits etc) until i stopped working about 20 years ago due to an illness. i had never been involved in such a physical labor intensive line of work before - but i LOVE it. i enjoy wandering around the streets of lower manhattan at night looking at things people abandoned (i had been one of those people myself when growing up and when i was previously working). my partner is mainly interested in looking at items for their scrap metal value and he has some experience with this from doing scrap metal collection over the past 6 months with his brother in law. i, too, am interested in this as well, but i also keep an eye out for items that can be repaired and that might have a higher value after such repair. already i have found and repaired 2 beautiful lamps (they only needed rewiring and new bulbs - basic, but still new to me), which i have kept in my small apartment (gave one away to a friend). now, because of this endeavor, i am already enlightened (bad, but couldn't resist)

we are newbies, beginners. i am sure that there are going to be many things that we will do wrong, but not for lack of effort. when i found this forum last week, i was amazed and grateful - here was a group of people who were willing to talk about what they, and we, were interested in. i am excited about the opportunity to be involved here and i hope that i do not annoy anyone with my ignorance. hopefully, i will be able to learn a lot here and to pass on whatever i learn in return. thank you.

    sincerely,

    richard
