Allow me to introduce myself,scrapping in Baltimore md

Hi I am just getting started in the scrap business , I started accumulating electronics mostly tube TVs from storage auctions and with a little help of some well placed ads.i mostly focus on the copper recovery because my knowledge on boards is still elementary. I keep my boards ,copper,wire seperate . I have trash cans that I'm working on filling with my steel scrap . I do seperate the power cords with the brass plugs from my other wire. That's the only wire I plan on stripping .currently my focus has been copper in TVs but I hope to educate myself enough to start on computer towers. I have 3 sitting on my work bench at the moment.

About TVs I feel very confident in my ability to scrap these without breaking glass and I recycle the tubes properly. Thanks for all information . I read this site everyday and it is very informative . Any tips are appreciated . I have a truck and I enjoy this as a hobby but I admire the idea of working for myself one day . This seems like a fun way to clean the earth and make a little coin. I will keep reading but I wanted to introduce myself.

If you head over to the electronic waste section of the site, there are several sticky threads at the top to help you break those towers down, an identify the parts inside.

A search will also lead to you several dozen threads on the various components an value of them.

Good luck on your move into computers. TV's got a good many of us started an some of us still enjoy breaking them down. An bravo on recycling the glass properly, an for not asking if there is gas in the tube.

Welcome from a Maryland person now living in NY! Here's my big tip on breaking down anything: Before you start taking it apart, make sure it isn't worth more if you leave it intact. If you get something and you're not sure what its resale value is, you can check the "sold" listings on eBay. If you can't find it there, you can do a search or ask here on the forum. Sometimes it's better to reuse than to recycle, and of course a lot of times it isn't. Knowing the difference can save you a lot of time and make you a lot more money.

Whether you have something for resale or for scrapping, there is a lot of information available at this forum. In many of the sections, you'll see a few topics that are always at the top of the list of threads. Those contain guidelines or articles (kind of like Wikipedia) contributed by members of the forum, and they're a great place to start. There are a lot of experienced, knowledgeable people here, and if you are interested in learning about their trade and sharing your own insights, you have come to the right place.
