    Hello from NC

Hello everyone. While I am completely new here, I have perused these forums from time to time. I am 26 years old. That may sound fairly young to most people, however, I have over 14 years experience in the scrap metal recycling business. I started tagging along with my dad when I was too old for summer camp. Across that decade and a half I've seen and experienced almost everything this business has to offer. My dad started as most people do, with a pickup truck and a few hundred dollars. He went from selling on a daily basis to weekly, so on and so forth, until he grew his business into what it is today. The bulk of my career has been spent in a truck and trailer driving all over the country buying and reselling scrap. I've bought from and sold to companies all over the country and a few places overseas. Four years ago we purchased a scrapyard and retired from the road. Last year we sold controlling interest to an even larger metal recycler, which brings me to today. I'm excited to be here and hope to learn/teach as much as possible. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope to meet some interesting people!

Cool. I can almost see your house from here.

Do you prefer running the scrap yard, or doing the driving and looking from your old days?

It each comes with it's pros and cons. The road was usually more exciting, less overhead, fewer laws and restrictions governing mobile recyclers verses those operating at a fixed location. However the hours were absurd at times, leaving out at 4am to get back after dark wears on you after a while. Working at a yard is more stable, don't have to cold call and search for scrap, it comes to you. Hours are fixed, more time at home. With family being a very important thing to me, I prefer the yard over the road.
