New here from Sunny Southern California

    Hello one and all!

My name is Josh and I am 25 years old. Currently I am juggling an office job, caregiving job, college, and scrapping.
As a kid, we didn't have much money so I always walked around the neighbor hood picking up can and bottles to recycle them for candy money. Now in my early mid twenty's, and was turned onto scrapping by a disabled client of mine. I do overnight support with him from 7pm-6:30am 4 nights a week with him and most of the time he is watching tv or sleeping. So needless to say, I have a ton of free time on my hands while I am with him. He has a mild form of autism and has an obsession with motors, flashlights, and clocks. Around his house he has a ton of small copper motors neatly organised in his house and I could never really figure out what they were and why he has them. So late at night while he was sleeping, I did some internet research and found out exactly what they were and how much money is really involved in it. I figured on my spare time I could make some decent side money in my free time. So I started doing research and learned a lot of things pretty quickly and got to scrapping. Most importantly, I am actually having a really good time doing it. It provides a stress relief and some extra cash a month.
Lucky for me I have several close friends who are like family, who are in several different trades(Plumbing, Heating and Air, Appliance Repair). I went to them for advice about the different metals that are in certain items and what I should know about taking them apart to scrap. A few of them agreed to supplying me with the items that they take off their job sites as long as I clean up and maintain their work area after I haul it out. I have quickly learned a lot of scrapping methods but am very aware that I have more to learn.

So if anyone is reading this, here is what I ask you so that maybe we can start a friendly dialog since I am new here.

What is one of your most memorable scraps, and what is the one lesson you took away from it?

    Cheers!
    Joshua

LOL Evan, there is major truth in that statement about stealing water lol... and even worse is even though we are in a major drought, we dont shorten up on watering the grass at least 3 times a day.
My family and I go on a yearly camping trip up to the Sierras, its amazing how low the water is out there right now, sad really.
    Thanks for the welcome!

Just about everything you need is already here and laid out in different sections, find one you like and go back to the older stuff and start reading. We have info on breaking down different stuff, and what's inside all kinds of stuff. Your collage education is already here, you just need to put some time in on it.

Welcome to the forum. I enjoy hearing from younger folks not afraid of work and curious enough to seek out information. You should do well and as Mech has stated your upper level scrap education is written in the old posts. Its continues to surprise me when I read something on the forum only to see it later in my life. You will recognize opportunities and profit from them because of this forum. Best of luck, Mike.

Welcome from South Dakota. " office job, caregiving job, college, and scrapping" haha, doesn't sound like you have much free time.
