    Greetings from Downeast Maine

    Hey all !

I'm Chris and I've been living / working in Downeast Maine for about 30 years now. ( Ayuh ! Another one of those transplants from outa state ....LOL ). Not much to say really. Been in the construction trades all this time and went out on my own back in 2001.The freedom of being your own boss is nice but there's a lot of responsibility that goes along with it.You survive or fail based strictly on your own merit. You have to learn to take the bad with the good and just roll with it.

I used to do a fair amount of copper & brass scrapping back when i was working in the plumbing trade. It was good for awhile but then scrap prices dropped and it wasn't really worth doing anymore.

Kinda fell away from scrapping till last year when my computer hobby started to take on a life of it's own. It was fun to take older machines running windows XP and fix them up. IMHO it was probably one of the better operating systems that Microsoft ever came up with.

Windows Vista wasn't very popular. There were problems with it.

Seeing as XP is now obsolete and Vista is unpopular the best use of these older machines is for salvage.

I started scrapping out the towers and desktops about a year ago. It's just a sideline. Something useful to do in the shop on the days when it's too cold or wet to be working outdoors in construction.

The trades are hard on a body and i was figuring that i might gradually shift more toward E- salvage over the next 8 - 10 years. There's not a lot of money in it but it's something that an old retired fulla living on social security could do for some additional income every month.

For now: It's just a work in progress. There's a lot to it. In the end it might -or- might not work out to be worth doing.

You never know unless you give it a try ! :-)

Thanks for the welcome. Central NH is a beautiful place. Don't know if it's anywhere close to where you are but i used to do quite a bit of backpacking into the White Mountains back in the day.

Ayuh .... that Downeast Maine accent is pretty distinctive. We have our own way of speaking the English language around heeyah. It gets interesting when we're talking with someone from a call center from India !

I've been lurking the forum for a couple of months now. There really is plenty of helpful info. This morning seemed like a good time to join. Maybe i can contribute something useful every so often. We're all in the same boat doing the same kind of work.

Yeah ... the buyers are good. I've done a couple of loads with ewasted and one with PTS.

I'm kinda taking the long view on this. It takes time and patience to build a new venture with sustainable business practices so that it endures. The relationships that you build with your buyers and sellers are an important part of that. If you do the right thing, and they do the right thing, it goes smoothly.

You both can do well for many years to come.

Welcome to the forums from a sandbar off the coast of NC!

An yes..your accent comes through in your posts. Lol. Do you say warsh instead of wash?

No biggie on accents, us southern folks toss out random terms now an then to keep the Yankee's on their toes.

Thanks for the warm welcome Sirscrapalot !

Yeah .... I see what you mean. Scrappah , lobstah, heeyah

Actually the accent really isn't all that thick in real life.I just like to poke fun at it. ( It's a Mainer thing. )

My eldest son moved down to Myrtle Beach about seven years ago and built a pretty good life for himself. You know ...good wife, young son, new home, decent vehicles. He bought an established business last year and doubled the gross in the first ten months. Things are really happening down your way !

My wife and i went down to visit a couple of years ago. It was December 17th and when we flew out of Myrtle Beach it was sunny and 65 deg. When we arrived in Bangor later on in the day it was down in the 20's with a hard wind out of the Northeast. LOL ... we rushed out to the parking lot to get into the shelter of the car only to discover the ignition key that we had been using for the last two years DOESN'T unlock the door.

    %$#@!!& locks ..... what a PITA !

    Heh.

Your name is what me think of the accent an your post of course. My wife has this weird thing she'll talk like she's from Boston with some words. Cracks me up as she's never been there! lol.

Myrtle Beach is booming, my sandbar is north of there by a couple hours. Glad he's doing well down there. There's a lot of good things about beach life, the sand an surf is just icing on the cake.

Anyhow, again welcome to the forums, everything you've ever wanted to know about the world of scrapping is here at your fingertips. Lots of knowledgeable folks here. I'm not one of them, I'm just the comic relief.
