    Hello.

    Hello,

My name is Scott and I work in Virginia Beach and greater Hampton Roads area. I served 6 years in the US Navy as an electrician and currently work in the ship yards. I am in the process of opening a property damage restoration franchise. I enjoy scrapping. Its a lot like fishing. I've been off work for about a week and I've been just driving around to the different areas on their trash days and have had a little luck (not so much today.) I like to fill up my truck and then see the scales when I get to the yard. I'm not very good at guessing. Anyway I am a very business minded person. I look for opportunity in everything I do. I can see potential with this but I have a lot of questions and a lot to learn. If anyone has tips for a beginner feel free to post them below.

    Thank you,

    Scott Johnson

Welcome from the Dakota's. Stock pile all of the nonferrous and call the yards with an estimate of what you have. As your stock pile increases, they will be more interested. Good luck and visit the library. Lot's of helpful tips there.

Welcome from a sandbar off the coast of NC. You know..right down the shore from you.

We have another from your area here, but I'll let him say hello in his own time. Far as advice...the whole forum is open to you good sir. Learn it, love it, research the hell out of it. It'll be the best education you'll receive in the scrapping world, short of experience.

If you haven't yet, visit our thread for former military folks.

Thanks for your service, from a kind of close neighbor.

Welcome from Maryland , just starting out gather everything you can from soda cans to ferrous wheels . I have never scrapped a ferrous wheel but I saw one today and had a thought . Anything you find can be researched on this forum . Grab a magnet and tear into some stuff . Also be sure to check local thrifts, auctions and any contractors you may know .

When I first started I was overwhelmed but now these members feel like family and I still learn something new everyday on this forum . I'm sure a ship yard would have some things you can bank on . Scrapping will definitly change the way you view things . Best of luck and welcome aboard !

    welcome

hope u just dont load everything u pick up & take it to the yard
    ur shortchanging yourself

    as others have mentioned:
u need to remove the copper, brass, alum etc-non ferrous
and then take in the steel & shred
u have to put in a bit of work to clean & seperate the non ferrous & then only will u get the max amount of money for ur efforts.

most of my big loads, i always have a few things that i bring home- i cant afford to give away the copper, brass etc as steel
its worth it in the end-after u accumulate a fair amount of non ferrous
ensure you have seperate bins/containers for each type & the yard will pay u for what u got.

    Speak on MS!

Excellent post. Everything MS said an thensome. If you just dropping at the yard your tossing money away. I break most everything down, unless it's not worth the work. Easier to fit in the ol'van, an more money in my pocket.

Good luck, your area has a lot of property restoration companies an scrappers, so you got a lot of competition. I know all this cause..Ya'lls **** CL spills over to mine. I see the posts often about contractors needed for that line of work along coast NC an VA.

I frequent that area quite a bit, not for scrap normally but..I like to visit. Wife gets to shop I get to go look at battleships an drink cold beer!

Sirscrapalot - Break it on down...not just your dance moves but your scrap to! - I'll take the credit.
