    Business help please!

First time post, I hope I'm posting this in the right section of this forum. Ive been to a scrap yard twice in my life and well i got it in my head that I'm going to open a yard. My dilemma is that i know absolutely nothing about the business other than obviously the basics. I just purchased 10 acres of land in East Orlando, Its the last property on a road that leads to a landfill... So in my scouting process theres plenty of business driving in the landfill paying to throw away their scrap. My business background is deep as I own a chain of retail stores in town. I have plenty of capitol to start up and all the equipment that most small scrap yards operate with. I don't have the time to get in a truck and scrap on a small scale to earn experience so I'm diving right on in with at least advice. Where and and who to sell to? Finding experienced staff? Where to find market prices? What to take in ( E-waste, Cars) Ext...So if theres anyone who has gone down this road before me and has a second to throw me a lifesaver it will be much appreciated. Hell id be willing to pay another scrap yard out of range so theres no competition issues to train me. Thank you all who take the time to read this and more thanks to the ones who decide to help.

Hey there, first let me tell you what I do. I advertise and look for scrap on behalf of scrapyards. In return they give me a commission on the scrap that I redirect into or out of their yards. The best thing is that I also find small time scrappers and have them drive up to their location. Also deal with big loads of scrap from chain stores. You are already ahead as you own a retail store and possibly know other shop owners who would gladly hand you their scrap.

My advice to you on finding prices would be to call any of the local scrapyards and find out how much they pay for their scrap. This is the easiest, cheapest and best way of finding out what kind of competition you will be working with. For working with out of state you would have to consider in the price of shipping as well as other competition.

You could sell to refineries or other scrapyards which is what most scrapyards do.
Also if you need assistance in getting scrap at your area contact me back and we can arrange something.
Email me at trypsinized@gmail.com as you don't have pm option available yet.

    Cheers,

    Maiwand

Any gators on that land? Scrapper goes missing...........gator food ? But really. Just go to a yard . Ask for the owner then tell them the same plea . Direct approach is understood in any business.

You are well ahead of the game in this regard . Do your research and with your location I imagine you doing very well . I would start with the basic metals and in the meantime . Work your way into ewaste when your more educated and have buyer and shipping costs figured out . 10 acres is a nice lot . Plenty of room to grow . Good luck and keep us posted .

P.s. If I was going to open a yard . I would have a dream team of employees . The guys that treat you fair and are all ready working at the yards is who I would pursue . They know their stuff and it would be worth beating their current salary in my opinion to have the experience and knowledge of the field on hand . If you take care of your people they will take care of you . Once again best of luck !

No advice on running your business because you don't want my advice. But first find out how your land is zoned and get all permits needed for a scrap yard.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

The knowledge, resources, and experience you need are available. I will not give out personal information over the web. You can read about my experiences on the forum and decide if I could be of assistance to you. There is a search bar in the upper right hand corner of the forum that will allow you to search various topics. If you are interested in finding out about me search Watertanks and a Scrappers Dream. Then you will have to make some comments and thanks on threads to earn the right to Private message another member. If you are willing to do this, PM me and we will see if it is a good match. I am either all in or all out on challenges as members of the forum will tell you.

Metalbestas hit it on the head. Read the book, Who is Riding Your Bus. Great information for anyone in management.

I am a teacher at heart and love challenges. Regardless of your decision, good luck and keep us posted on your progress. We love pictures. The real value of anyone you find to help you will be networking and this web site and forum will be important to your success.

I would like to chime in here being a former scrap yard owner, you may not like it but here it comes, the scrap metal business is a great business for people that know the business ,,,,,, it could be and will be a disaster for you. The reason being is number one the metals that you bought this week for such an price will be not worth the same when you sell them in thirty to ninety days from now, you have no experience or industry connections, as you said you were in a scrap yard twice in your life, what are you thinking????
You are as you say a experienced successful business owner, the capital that you have massed will disappear in a few short months, it does not matter how much you have, the inexperience along with no knowledge on what to buy, how much to pay for it, and no where to sell it will destroy you. I am just telling you the facts of the Scrap Metal Industry, If you want to get into this business and I can understand the reasons, I have been in it all my life, the only way is to find a yard looking for a working partner, use your business knowledge to enhance that business get the knowledge that you would need to operate a successful yard and then by all means go ahead with your plans-dreams, because if you don't you will wake up from a nite mare and all that capital you have will be a memory.
That is the bear truth. Not sugar coated, please do your self a favor and take my advise it's the best free advise you will ever get in area of Scrap Metal. Good luck to you, if you decide to go ahead with your dream you will need it, Happy Scraping 1956

1956 is absolutely right. The scrap metal business is as old as civilization itself. The history and control of the market goes back into history and is still the same today. Please read the history and study how you can infiltrate the market before you invest any more money. You might find that your investment might make more money in other endeavors. And I repeat the advise, networking in this industry is as valuable as any other business venture. Good luck.

Which by all means your in your right of giving but I feel is not needed. I was honest coming into this question and sure I left a door open for this but common brother, I get it!

Wanted to correct the title of the book mentioned before. It is "Who is Driving Your Bus."

A person can either learn from the experiences of others or the school of hard knocks. Successful decisions are made with research, gathering the right people, and thinking outside the box. This forum has enough information and resources to allow the right individual to tackle any challenge in the scrap metal industry, if they are open to learning. The most valuable resource to a successful person is their devil's advocate. This element forces the individual to rethink and defend their instincts or decisions.

The posts in this thread proves all of this especially to experienced members that can read between the lines. Edrey, please do not be offended by the comments of 1956 or anyone else, and instead be motivated by them. I would not give up on the idea, only do more research before planting the seed money. Research is free on the net and this forum through questions and reading old threads. Good luck.

This thread has intrigued me more than other threads recently. I see this as a low risk - high return investment with several different strategies. I think you are in the right place at the right time and could create a whole new business model for the scrap world industry.

Best strategy is to search the old threads on scrap yards. If you do not have time, start a new thread on scrap yard equipment, issues, training, any topic you are interested in. Many on here do not like to give advice until a new member pays their dues. In this situation, I think you have something that could benefit members in the long run and I would be willing to offer any insight I could to benefit the forum. The more posts you have the quicker you will be able to use the private message feature, then members could share insight they do not want to make public. Just a thought.

    Good luck.

Well Edrey, I would just like to say that I was not trying to criticize you in any way and I am sorry if it came out that way, let me just say that I wish you the best of luck. The thing that makes the scrap industry so compelling is the fact that every day is different from the next. There are many different aspects to running a successful scrap yard, any one can buy a piece of property, install a scale, put up some signs and be in business. But you not having any knowlage of any aspect are in my opinion in for a rude awakening, I would not want to go into any business where I am at the mercy of my employes and also my customers and that's the position you will be putting your self in.Good Luck..

I got a little sensitive and defensive myself 1956! Thank you for the apology my brother. I'll give you guys a background on the property... It was a fencing company for the past 20 years but unfortunately the owner recently lost the fight against the BIG C! So the wife of the old man was left to run the fencing company and unfortunately is l
