The New law isn't that bad. If you have more than $25 in copper, they mail a check for your load. My small scale operator doesn't mind weighing it out...I just save the remainder for the next day.

So briefly what is the law? Is it if you bring in more than $25 in materials you get a check? Does the yard issue the check on the spot or do you have to wait on it.

My main yard will pay with a check for over $100 (which I photo and deposit via my cell phone). Another gives a receipt and that is scanned into an ATM at the yard and you get cash.

The funny thing about more regulations it rarely helps solve problems just give politicians something to talk about. The laws were meant to stop thieves. Mike

Now go beat the copper out of something, Miked

What else does it apply to? Not brass or aluminum...I learn by experience.

It's not by combined weight. I was cashed out at over $100 for the load I took in this morning.

Law is for MOST copper material. Includes copper, insulated copper, copper/aluminum radiators, and such. Does not count for brass, aluminum, and other non ferrous. Anything with a combined value over $25 is mailed to address on your ID. Plus additional photos of yourself and material at yards. The exception to the rule is if you a business license (dba/llc) on file, in this case they can give you check that day in the business name. Most of the bigger yards have had a seamless transition and some of the smaller mom and pop yards that are not computerized to begin with are totally lost in the process.

the yard I go to on the west side of Michigan mail a check for #1 copper, acr's and catalytic converters over $25. I get normally get the check in 2-3 business days. I take those in with a load of sheet and they cut me a check on the spot for the sheet.

I've watched Gle ask for one of the regulars business info. Question: Does the type of llc matter? Plumbers, electricians, etc have obvious sources of copper...but what if you're registered for junk hauling or resale consignment? They're a bit more vague.

SMF must be the least sexist forum (or maybe gentlemen) ...... Well good luck new girl.....It's not about your sex but on how YOU look and do in the business.

British - Still believes in being a gentleman towards women(in a non patronising way with ladies)

type of business does not matter. But they wont cut you a check on the spot if you dont have llc/dba paperwork with you as well as something showing your business address (business card/bill), Mine gets made out to Direct Recycle then i just take to my bank where i have a business checking account. once they make a copy they generally dont need it again because its onfile.

Welcome from the Dakota's. I like your name, it reminds of a girl I dated in college. Good luck to you in your venture. Based on the national news, the new law is the least of Detroit's problems. My local scrap yard pays with a check on any type of metal over $ 10.00, but the yards in my new location pay cash for everything.

I absolutely LOVE your screen name!

The law has not affected me as of yet because I am a business. Since I have a biusiness name I get paid the same day, as I always have. Perhaps something others should look into?
